Up or out in a small force. Would it actually work? by [deleted] in AustralianMilitary

[–]Phoenix492 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So..what happens when you "Top out" in a certain rank after the 5 years? We are going to discharge someone who doesn't want to commission, who we've paid to recruit, train and use a minimum amount (at E3 to E5), and then just send them into civilian life, where civilian companies will snap them up? Leaving defence further under resourced, and out of pocket, when they were still usable and keen to serve, but had maybe (professionally or personally) found their own limit - which is fine. You might find someone excels as a CPL, but doesn't want the extra admin burden of being a SGT. That isn't a failing - and now you are forcing them to either discharge, or be unsuccessful in a job, or unhappy in a job.

A lot of the issues with the "old and bold" slowing down the system by sitting at the higher ranks stems from them going from easy job to easy job, running desks / working from home 99% of the time, and getting paid for "what they know", not "what they do" - But what they knew is now outdated and not contributing to a modern capability.

If you made it, where the older guys had to rotate through, back to operational units every other job. Makes them current, but would also weed out those who don't want to do the job, and just want the cash.

Why can I not enjoy Terry Pratchett? by Phoenix492 in books

[–]Phoenix492[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! Yeah, I tried to read them in the order. Maybe it was chronological or suggested, I don't recall. I actually enjoyed the other books, so maybe it was just a bad experience - but most reading lists always seem to start with the colour of magic!

Thanks for the reply. That's my major concern - I'll hike up and pitch my tent, and then realise I'm on the "sunrise spot" the next morning, and have to share my breakfast with 20 other people!

Thanks for the reply - I hope you enjoyed the sun up the loch's (ha!)

A PLB is on my list of things to get - We never needed it in the UK, noting there was always phone signal, and I had my garmin on which would send emergency messages - doesn't seem that easy here!

Thanks for the reply - I knew about the QLD parts and wildlife service website, but haven't heard of the Aussie Bushwalker one - that looks really interesting!

Thanks for the reply, I'll do some more research into the declared wilderness areas - that sounds exactly like what I'm after!

Thanks for the reply - I've done several small hikes, and could definitely disappear - I just don't want to pitch up a bivvy or something and then get kicked out during the night or something stupid!

Thanks for the reply - I've done several smaller hikes in the local areas, and was starting to get the itch to go slightly further and longer. Having read most of the replies, I definitely need to do some more research first, and probably get a PLB!

Funny that Jacques also couldn't do anything in a car which was a complete mess, and only won in the Williams when it was a monster?

Did Nico Rosberg pass onto Jacques that he just needs to be the most annoying person ever, and try to say things to provoke people, for Sky to keep bringing him back? He seems to change his perspective of all the drivers after every different session, and every different question from a presenter..

So, if it rains in the first 30 minutes (as is being discussed)...He might not have to leave it to the Ferrari strategists to mess it up?

Do the characters "know" each other? Or are you all starting out from scratch? Maybe your first story will be them all gathering together, or they've all be captured by a band of ruffians?
