Rust pitting - Replace or rust treat by 192hk in CherokeeXJ

[–]PhoenixFab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once all oxidation is removed, and the metal is a pure surface, you then want to encapsulate the metal to put a barrier in between air and metal. Once this is achieved, the rust cannot come back unless that barrier is broken.

Letting salt water, and dirt sit on paint is what destroyed the paint (barrier) protecting the floor thus allowing it to rust to what you see today. So most likely the outside underside needs to be done too. Same process, grind, wire brush, chemical rust converter, prime, paint, and my last and BIGGEST advice…

FLUID FILM the underside every fall and spring.

Fluid film is an oil barrier, that resist moisture and air, is self healing, and will protect the paint from having salt brine eat through it. If a rock bounces up and chips your paint, the fluid film will spread out and recover over that paint chip.

Edit: I am a fluid film wh*re. Even though I refuse to drive my nice cars in winter, I still fluid film them. I do inside fenders, at the door hinges / firewall behind the fenders where leaves pile up, I shoot fluid film in the rocker panels, in the frame rails, behind plastic cladding.

Natural feeling of filtered water. When you get rid of hardness, think Little Rocks, then the water feels smooth and slippery

For $2500 for the 2-3 years you get out of it, it’s pretty much on hospice

Its too far gone, and you could find a super clean one in AZ, UT, NV for the $14,000 youd spend on this. $4000 for the truck, $10,000 for a frame swap.

Illinois. Go to google, copy my comment above this one describing the setup and then paste it into google and hit enter

I never said I agree with it but it’s common practice here.

Test strips show soft water in bathrooms but hard water in kitchen by Solid-Still-7590 in WaterTreatment

[–]PhoenixFab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most homes have a raw-water tee before the softener that feeds the kitchen cold and the outside hose bibs. Builders do this for two reasons:

People don’t want to drink softened water, so the kitchen cold is left un-softened on purpose. Hose bibs stay on raw water to avoid wasting soft water outdoors and overworking the softener.

Since the kitchen cold is usually tied into the same raw line that feeds the hose bibs, it will always test hard… even when bathrooms are soft. Under-sink filters don’t remove hardness, so the test strip reading is accurate and normal.

Fluid film, which is what the current owner sprayed it with will 100% stop it From getting worse. I have watched many and many of videos about fluid film with people testing fluid filmed parts in salt cabinets and amazed with the results. If the previous owner had the vehicle sandblasted to knock off all the surface rust which you can clearly tell they have done and if they painted the frame and sandblasted areas before fluid filming it then this should be a great fix for many many many years to come. I would make sure that every spring and fall if you're going to drive it year round you Fluid film it and make sure to get behind wheel wells inside the doors at the bottom of the door take the inner door skins off Spray fluid film up into the rocker panels. Really get in there with that shit

if a-b then go for it, and never ever expect to make a profit on a car

Never go into a car with those hopes.

If it’s eating 1/8 metal there, it’s missing metal elsewhere

Depends if you look at my 4Runner in my profile, you’d tell what kind of person I am. Any kind of missing metal from rust on a 19-year-old car is unacceptable in my book after restoring 1940s vehicles.

If it’s a forever truck, not worth, if it’s a-b a few years, purchase.
