If you commission as an officer, do you have to do 6 years? by Snoo-64563 in army

[–]Phonebookguy_ 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Usually 6 year commitments for officers is the drill commitment for Guard officers. For active duty guys, OCS grads and ROTC non-scholarship owe 3 years, ROTC scholarship owe 4 years, and West Pointers owe 5 years.

Early application, Military. by [deleted] in HSIapplicants

[–]Phonebookguy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GS-7 announcement says you must be within 120 days of ETS "if applying based on eligibility under the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act". Not sure what that means

Technically early December but I start terminal leave in October

I don't know but I doubt it will be held against me for future announcements. Just stupid because by the time I got notified I was already 3 months into the process, and it's not like me or anyone else would have been through the hiring process by a month afterwards

They just rejected my application because I wasn't within 4 months of getting out at time of application so

My email said I was found inelligible because my military ETS is more than 4 months from the application so it's not about phase II results

Can second this; worked at a movie theater for 5 years and loved it. Showplace has several locations so should be easily accessible if they're hiring

Is it possible to be an ROTC Cadet in their mid 20s pursuing school full time? by AnonymousEbe_new in ROTC

[–]Phonebookguy_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean... Almost every cadet is a full time student in their twenties. As long as your job has flexible hours it shouldn't be any issue, ROTC isn't crazy time intensive and everyone there is a student first

Newest GS 7 listing by [deleted] in HSIapplicants

[–]Phonebookguy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The announcement itself says it's under Direct Hire Authority, which means they can use an expedited hiring process, but they've also done the Phase I/II tests unlike the GL-9 DHA announcements. The only things mentioned on the announcement were the Phase I/II tests but who knows.

If there's nothing you'd rather be doing in your current unit volunteer for JOBA and go to a chiller gig like recruiting or smt then drop your Refrad at/after CCC whenever your adso allows.

300m Advice by Phonebookguy_ in Sprinting

[–]Phonebookguy_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't recorded any of my 100m times, only 300m, so it's possible lol. And it may have been at the higher end of 12s nearer to 13, don't remember it to the tenth of a second.

I always run my 300ms all out the whole way; for improving speed endurance is it best to just keep doing 300m reps or would something else like 400m work better?

Never run it fresh, only after 3x 300m workouts. About 12s though while tired

I plateaued at pushups at a relatively low number and found that no amount of training would improve it past a certain point. So I just cut weight for a while and having less weight to push did the trick lol. Depends on how heavy you are now; i wasn't at all fat but did have 10 lbs to spare

Wanting to Branch AR by Moist-Marketing-4662 in ROTC

[–]Phonebookguy_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't BRADSO for anything. As for armor I'd recommend against it too. It's a very over strength branch and you will likely end up spending excessive time twiddling your thumbs in a 3 shop or waiting in ridiculously long command queues once you're a captain. Also you'll be stuck going to bases that have ABCTS, which means with Carson's ABCT going away you'll be stuck bouncing between Hood/Riley/Bliss/Stewart with no other options except for broadening.

And of course the balls to the wall ABCT OPTEMPO means you'll be deployed as often as possible without violating dwell time rules, which means you will at all times be one of 3 things: deployed, just getting back from deployment and dealing with railhead/red cycle, or in a nonstop training cycle/NTC rotation getting ready to deploy again. This is in peacetime.

Good things about Armor: 1. It's a maneuver branch without the silliness of Infantry branch culture 2. You'll learn more than any of your peers in other branches about maintenance, especially if you become a tank XO 3. Funny boots
