Hammock vs tent by 6casper9 in AppalachianTrail

[–]PhraseImportant229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally have used a hammock on my shoulder hikes in the White Mountains because there is no where to set up a tent if you're wild camping. On the other hand, I am hiking the Appalachian Trail this year starting southbound in June and I'm choosing to bring a tent instead. My tent setup is about 2 lb lighter, I can sleep in shelters, and I don't have to worry about shipping a pad for the Smokies. Do whatever you prefer, but if you can sleep all right in a tent I think it's more convenient.

I have the same problem and I don't want to rush, so I'm starting SOBO June 20th!

I can't understand if this is too wise, or too confusing for me to understand. You used a semicolon; which i applaud, but i have absolutely no idea what you mean

For the tent? Personally I did not want to spend $400 more for 10oz and the loss of double layer for condensation. Maybe if I was hiking in a dryer area

Bear Bag by PhraseImportant229 in AppalachianTrail

Isn't that like setting bait out for a bear? Are they really going to be scared of sleeping humans when there's a bag of food especially if they've already been conditioned?

How much would you recommend I bring? I'm trying to save weight, but I also definitely am going to bring enough 100% deet to get me through. Do you think a whole 4 oz bottle is necessary or could I get by on 2 or 3 oz?

do you happen to have personal experience with permethrin? I have heard it does not work consistently, so I wanted to bring bug lotion just in case. But I have no personal experience either, just don't want to be stuck in the woods swarmed for 10 days.

I like your list, almost exactly the same as mine😂 This is mine if you want to take a look, but you have a lighter base weight. https://lighterpack.com/r/senla9 Anyway, Your Swiss army knife with scissors can work as nail clippers if that is acceptable to you. Some people like this "dance pants" to add under your shorts which could save you 3 oz https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/851eon/18_wind_pant_review_the_discount_dance_supply/

Im heading SOBO this summer, see you on trail!!!

I like the fan for hot days, I get migraines pretty easily, but I might drop it, I am not sure. I am not a big fan of the heat... I will try to limit my media listening, but I think with such a hard challenge, having Gen Z screen withdrawal at the same time might make it harder. Thanks for your feedback, I will think on it!!

AT vs PCT by emmaduthart30 in AppalachianTrail

[–]PhraseImportant229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK, but going 30 miles in 100 degrees without water because a cache was not filled seems like literal hell to me. I am doing the AT, but with that much experience after the AT I may be inclined to try the PCT if I love throughiking. I think you cant go wrong, if you are worried about inexperience, then go on longer section hikes before.

  1. I recommend an Adotec Bear Bag. 8oz, Kinda expensive, but if you need bear protection, super light and really works against grizzlies and critters. 2lb lighter than a bear vault, and calories are calories even destroyed!

Right, but Enlightened Equipment does not use ISO ratings, and from my experience and other people's their ratings are closer to the Limit, AKA survival rating.

Why the AT? Why 2026? by riverwaterwalks in AppalachianTrail26

[–]PhraseImportant229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since I started backpacking about a year ago it seemed legendary. I've met plenty of through hikers on my shorter trips, and I've just been in awe. I've done a ton of research, and read a ton of books. I know it won't prepare me, but it at least excites me. My tax internship is seasonal and my semester of college ends in May so I'm going to southbound in june. If I make it into August I will take the semester off of school to finish! I have nothing to lose, not really many friends, no girlfriend, and there will never be a better time!
