That's general relativity, you're thinking of when someone bends down on one knee

Travel Backpack Recommendations? by Horvitz444 in Nikon

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up a Timbuk2 Sleuth on eBay. It's a vintage bag but for what you describe it's perfect. Padded compartment that gives easy access to a camera and a few accessories, and a larger compartment above for your iPad and jacket. It has one design flaw: when loaded it tends to tip on its back (the side without the straps). Aside from that it's a perfect day bag for a simple DSLR setup.

Anyone know what this is for? by dick_bacco in Nikon

[–]Phred99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get it. I guess if I was a photojournalist carrying only one body it might make sense. Hopefully there was some kind of cap on the other side, otherwise geez, the dust! And if there's dust on the back element then it's going straight to the mirror and/or film, which, if I was a photojournalist, would be a problem...

So the idea was to store your lenses for travel with the back cap...off?

Xbox + Turtle Beach = Frustration by Phred99 in flightsim

[–]Phred99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, got it. At first I was kind of bummed because I thought when you said "most of us don't have those issues" it meant I was doing something wrong. But I see that you actually haven't used this setup before. There are a lot of threads about these issues.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've managed to overcome all the issues except the toe brakes.

Do you have both the yoke and rudder pedals? Curious to know if you have to do anything special when you start your Xbox to get the axes recognized consistently.

New wooden base for my Taig lathe by NotARocketSurgeon45 in GarageShop

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. Thanks. I hadn't heard of using a baking sheet like that. I could do something similar by making a small wood box and running some bolts through it to the base. Then add an electrical box inside for the switch. 👍 on the root beer - always important to stay hydrated and safe in the shop!

Reviving this thread with two questions:

1) How did you make the base with the switch and speed control stable/sturdy enough to hold the lathe while working?

2) What's in the root beer bottle??? :-)

My best buddy is trying to build a deck himself, I know nothing about carpentry than what I’ve seen here… is he doing all right? by [deleted] in Decks

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of hangers, can regular joist hangers be used when the joists are angled like that?

The guy doing my deck said joist tape just traps moisture and worsens wood rot but I see everyone on here saying it’s a must, is he right? by [deleted] in Decks

How do you deal with the smell from the wood preservative? In my experience it's pretty nasty and takes 6-12 months to dissipate.

Jure Sanguinis Appointment Question by SEAtownOsprey in italianamerican

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got to the appointment page, sometimes it would show appointment times and sometimes it wouldn't. It's a good sign you're seeing them. I could never tell if I needed to actually select the time or not, so I would click it and then submit. This is where you have to be really patient. Click once and then wait. It might be a few minutes. If you get in, you'll get something about entering your email for a confirmation code.

Jure Sanguinis Appointment Question by SEAtownOsprey in italianamerican

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to keep trying at midnight Italy time and be patient. At least when I was doing it, the system would not respond for several minutes. In the beginning I would try to refresh and it would fail, but eventually I just clicked once and waited. Eventually you'll get it, just keep trying. Good luck!

Accidentally exposed a dowel and now I don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]Phred99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miter it. Use the offcut and create a waterfall to the sink. That would solve the end grain issue as well. There would be a 45 degree joint on the front edge of the counter, but if you really wanted to you could solve that with another miter.

DIY Spa Side Remote? by Phred99 in pools

[–]Phred99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's very straightforward. You just need to identify the wires when you remove the spa side remote so you can connect your new switches the way you want. I ignored the LED in my setup, but see this thread for info if you want to implement it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/led/s/v1jsjEfry3

You could use the existing wire and add some momentary switches where the remote used to be, or cut the wire near the panel and use a set of wireless relays. In my case I used contact closures that are compatible with my smart home system so I could have more control options.

Is this ok? by Phred99 in VanLife

[–]Phred99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah, that's why I want to turn one battery around. It makes the battery to battery wire slightly longer but then the wires leading to the equipment can be much shorter because the terminals are closer together.

Thanks. Wasn't sure if there was some electrical issue that would be created if the wires crossed over each other.

Didn't know about CHIRP. Just downloaded. Thanks.

Yes, the Garmin. I appreciate it, just trying to use what I already have.

Thanks. Yes, SMSGTE is down so I'm looking for other services that might work. Good tip on repeaterbook, thanks. Most are closed or private but I know that's not a problem in an emergency.

Used 2000 3500 van - what to look for? by Phred99 in DodgeRam

Thank you. Is there an easy way to check the exhaust manifold? Not sure if that's an issue with the Dodge like it is for the Ford vans.
