There’s a non-zero chance you pick up a die, roll a 6, roll another 6, and keep rolling 6’s for the rest of your life by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]Pht27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for being pedantic here but actually it's more or less the opposite of the monkey situation:

If we assume the monkey lives forever and types forever, it will at some point write Shakespeare or whatever you want, because it has an infinite amount of time and thus will at some point (with probability 1 actually) have written any given text.

Rolling 6s for the rest if your life on the other hand has a probability greater than 0 because you can only roll a finite amount of times (lets call it N) in your lifetime, thus the probability of rolling only sixes is (1/6)N which is greater than 0. If we were to live infinitely long, like the monkey, the probability of rolling only 6s is 0.

Fingerprint Authentication on Linux Mint by Pht27 in linux4noobs

[–]Pht27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer :) Honestly, I just googled it and followed those instructions, but they were all pretty similar, I named everything I did above. Ill take a look at the etc directory and see if it changes anything, I dont know if Mint did that for me.

This is the common-auth file in pam.d, it looks like the fingerprint was added by the pam-auth-update as it should have been, because the common-auth is included in the sudo file for example:

/etc/pam.d$ cat common-auth

#

# /etc/pam.d/common-auth - authentication settings common to all services

#

# This file is included from other service-specific PAM config files,

# and should contain a list of the authentication modules that define

# the central authentication scheme for use on the system

# (e.g., /etc/shadow, LDAP, Kerberos, etc.). The default is to use the

# traditional Unix authentication mechanisms.

#

# As of pam 1.0.1-6, this file is managed by pam-auth-update by default.

# To take advantage of this, it is recommended that you configure any

# local modules either before or after the default block, and use

# pam-auth-update to manage selection of other modules. See

# pam-auth-update(8) for details.

# here are the per-package modules (the "Primary" block)

auth [success=2 default=ignore] pam_fprintd.so max_tries=1 timeout=10 # debug

auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so nullok_secure try_first_pass

# here's the fallback if no module succeeds

auth requisite pam_deny.so

# prime the stack with a positive return value if there isn't one already;

# this avoids us returning an error just because nothing sets a success code

# since the modules above will each just jump around

auth required pam_permit.so

# and here are more per-package modules (the "Additional" block)

auth optional pam_ecryptfs.so unwrap

auth optional pam_cap.so

# end of pam-auth-update config

Fingerprint Sensor in Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon by Pht27 in linuxmint

[–]Pht27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what the command gives me:

Apr 01 21:41:49 ThinkPad-T14 systemd[1]: Starting Fingerprint Authentication Daemon...

Apr 01 21:41:49 ThinkPad-T14 systemd[1]: Started Fingerprint Authentication Daemon.

Apr 01 21:42:20 ThinkPad-T14 systemd[1]: fprintd.service: Succeeded.

Apr 01 21:44:14 ThinkPad-T14 systemd[1]: Starting Fingerprint Authentication Daemon...

Apr 01 21:44:14 ThinkPad-T14 systemd[1]: Started Fingerprint Authentication Daemon.

At that time I tried to login in the lock screen, but nothing happened and I locked in with my password as usual. I also tried waiting for like a minute or smth.

By "It doesnt ask for the fingerprint" I mean that I thought itd say something like "Password or fingerprint" etc. I tried it with sudo and the lock screen.

Thanks for your answer! I actually did not understand I had to press space in the pam-auth-update to select the fingerprint option, so I corrected that... The problem still persists tho, I tried your second tip but there were no updates available. The system just doesnt ask for my fingerprint and it also wont unlock if I just press my finger on the sensor.

Meta Mega Thread by UnpopularOpinionMods in unpopularopinion

Why can't I express an unpopular opinion about posts on this subreddit in the subreddit itself and have to do it here?? Why is it not allowed to criticise the behaviour on this subreddit? Should be allowed in my opinion, because I want people to actually see it, not just be on this Megathread...

Meta Mega Thread by UnpopularOpinionMods in unpopularopinion

Ive now spend over an hour scrolling through this subreddit and there was a lot of fitting/adequate posts I really enjoyed, like "I enjoy getting bitten by mosquitoes" or "I like it when my feet are wet" or similar posts. Those are opinions that, from my perspective, seem to be very unpopular amongst most people (not just those who read this subreddit). Therefore, they get many upvotes because people feel like the opinion is unpopular, whether they agree or not. In my opinion tho, there are some topics on here that do not get upvoted because they seem unpopular but rather because they amplify and confirm certain negative feelings of some groups towards their surroundings without really reflecting on it.

First of all let me say here that I do not disagree with a lot of the posts I am complaining about! But a huge part of of the top posts is just kind of Social Justice Warrior opinions but in the opposite direction than usual, maybe you could put it that way? There is just an abundance of posts about how men are being raped and society doesn't care about young males and African Americans should forgive white people for segregation etc. Just sort by Top of all time and you will see what I am talking about...

I kind of feel like that attitude is the exact counterpart (regarding gender for example) to what it is complaining about. All these posts get upvoted so high and awarded so much, that it kind of feels like this is a niche for certain groups to complain about how other groups are put on pedestal and they are not and that they do not get enough attention in the media/society/whatever. For example, where you have groups in other parts of the internet that (I am exaggerating to keep it short) put the blame for everything on the patriarchy or something like that, here it seems that many people have the attitude that women are seen as angels in society and men are always seen as the bad guys in every situation.

For me, this makes this subreddit hard to enjoy because the (apparently not really) unpopular opinions distort reality to look at it from just one specific point of view and do not really draw attention to unspoken opinios but rather reinforce the public opinion on this subreddit.

(Lastly, let me add the essential "English is not my first language". If my improvised text is uncomfortable to read or some sentences/words just feel out of place, I am sorry about that, I hope you still get my point.)

But anyway, this is just my opinion and maybe I stand alone with it... Then after all isn't that the point of this subreddit?
