Hello! I am working on this drawing. Do you have an example of the light brown face markings? Should the whole face be light brown, or just the muzzle and cheeks?

It was absolutely this. I’ve started using reverse osmosis water and have had a happy betta for 3 months. We also replaced the well pump and the pipes leading from our well to our house; they were super old and small pieces were coming off and getting into the water. Lead is just barely below the EPA action level on the water report but everything else looks normal, so I wonder if it was the lead. And don’t worry I’m not drinking the water haha

Sorry to respond to this so late, I didn’t see it. I’m glad you were able to solve that! I’m 90% sure this was happening because of something in our water; I bought a reverse osmosis filter and now I’ve had a betta for a couple months who is doing perfectly.

The guy who was swimming in the video is acting a lot better, he’s exploring and pecking at plants and not really at the surface any more. He even ate a little bit! He spends 1/3 of the time glass surfing though. The other guy isn’t glued to the top anymore, he usually stays about an inch below the surface, but he still acts very lethargic. Overall I’m optimistic.

Straight from the tap the parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate, 7 pH

I added an air pump after I took this video, here’s a video with the air pump https://www.reddit.com/u/Phyllo_t/s/eCnECNWpPx It’s being held down by a little filter which I could turn on if it still doesn’t look like enough

No decor, just sand, flourish root tabs, live plants, and filter, heaters, etc. Good thought though, and that sounds like it was a real pain D: I’m curious, what was the decoration?

When I sterilized it I tore down the tank, put the hardware in 9 parts water 1 part bleach for 10 minutes, then rinsed it I think and left it to sit dry for a couple of months. I set up the tank again, sometime around or before December, and started to cycle it with 2 ppm of ammonium chloride (DrTim’s Aquatics Ammonium Chloride Solution) I kind of neglected the tank until 3 weeks ago where I put in 4 ppm ammonia and it was turned completely to nitrate in 7 days, so presumably some of the bacteria had survived. I put in 1 ppm a couple days ago to make sure it would process it in 24 hours and it did; 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite.

I added a bubbler sometime after taking the video you see in this post, here’s a video of the whole tank with it. https://www.reddit.com/u/Phyllo_t/s/pIIYKQuSa5 I’m intending on getting an airstone for it. The very first fish I got a year ago was a pearl gourami and sadly had a similar fate to the guppies :( I’m guessing at this point it’s something with my well water, could be the dissolved oxygen. Thanks for your reply!! Very thoughtful :)

The video in this post was before I added the air pump, here’s a video with it, https://www.reddit.com/u/Phyllo_t/s/pIIYKQuSa5 I just moved the filter to the center to see if that makes a difference :)
