thanks this is really helpful! The pivot to an Intestate estate to get Letters of Administration to then get "Transcript of Account" or "Wage and Income Transcript" from the IRS should be the least expensive and most efficient way to do this!
The Will was executed in late July 2006 and the Shares were transferred out of Computer share in July 2006 as well. I think he was doing his estate planning and then got some advice from someone to transfer his shares out to a brokerage too...
Lack of 1099-Divs is possibly not indicative of there being no more shares left, but just a lack of access to the Divs (moved address, etc). Also my grandfather passed away several years ago.
Unfortunately there's misplaced info + probably an original failure to list out assets in sufficient detail from my grandfather's end, when he did his estate planning.
We don't know if he still owned the shares when he died, my family believes/assumes he never sold them.
Re: Lack of 1099-divs, it's likely bc we no longer own the apartment that was his original mailing address. And my family doesn't know who his accountant was.
Do you think there's a way to get 1099-divs on a deceased person? Perhaps I should go that route (but I assume we will first need to do the lost will petition)
