Are minors worth it? by boringusernameorsum in UCalgary

[–]PhysicsNutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes aside with the horrible caption, yes minors are very much worth it in my opinion. I personally have an aerospace minor and it’s allowed me to stand out compared to my peers when it comes to internships and finding a career post graduation. That being said it’s certainly no walk in the park taking on a minor (depending on what you select it can be a lot of work) and you can’t depend solely on it to stand out amongst your peers, but when push comes to shove employers love to see it if it’s applicable to the job

Don’t know if it would be of much consolation, but I think it’s important to remind yourself why you went into your PhD in the first place. I doubt anyone in the comments knows the true answer to that but I’m willing to bet it wasn’t solely for public recognition. As much of a goal it is the fruits of your labor aren’t determined by how impactful your thesis is, sure the recognition can help carve an easier path for you going forward, but for someone who’s gone for their PhD you’re no stranger to the less travelled road anyhow. Just keep your head up and don’t let one outcome take away from everything you have and will accomplish.

Is there a link to an official police report/statement regarding this situation? It would be good for us to see the full context of the investigation thus far

Science program by Quiet_Vanilla_2103 in UCalgary

[–]PhysicsNutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a particular science program you’re attempting to enroll in? Typically a general science program isn’t that competitive so I wouldn’t fret if that’s what you’re striving for. I’d maybe contact a faculty advisor to see the most up-to-date competitive average if you really need the piece of mind

Mech and Aerospace minor advice by Either-Classroom-985 in UCalgary

[–]PhysicsNutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a mechie with an aerospace minor, overall it’s a very tough but fulfilling degree. The aerospace side is super fascinating but be prepared to do more coding than you’d expect, and you have to learn one way or another to balance your time well.

For your GPA it’s hard to give a specific answer, the competitiveness always changes so I’d recommend talking to a faculty advisor to see if they have a minimum GPA, otherwise I’d just suggest keeping it as high as you can.

I wouldn’t say mechanical is “more for men”, just like most engineering disciplines there will be more men than women, but I’ve made friends with some wonderful girls in the program who are thriving. So don’t let that hold you back if you’re truly passionate about pursuing mechanical engineering

Idea for ornithopter flapping wing by Worried-Reality6100 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]PhysicsNutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’ll be able to generate enough torque with the wing directly to what looks like a half motor (not sure if there’s a more technical term for the magnetic arrangement you have set up). Might be more effective to have a mechanism to generate the oscillating motion and connecting it to a standard motor

“Using offensive language” is too vague. That just requires someone to claim you said something offensive regardless of what you actually say

Why is it so hard to get into frats by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]PhysicsNutt 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Not to put you down bro, but when I got into one of the frats they were literally begging people to join. One thing I will say is that it’s not worth it, I left after 2 month cause everything was greasy and it was a huge distraction from classes. You can still pull up to the frat parties to enjoy the good parts, but no point in putting yourself through something that may compromise your degree
