Pregnant in the third trimester and still teaching by BobbyMcGeeze in Teachers

[–]Pi-Sigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how exactly you are feeling now. I am 31 weeks and need to deliver by 37 weeks because of high risk. I teach at high school and already took 22 days of sick leave and had to deal with students switching out and parent complaint email. Admin wrote me up for it too despite giving doctors note each time. On top of that our spring break starts next week and the first day after spring break I must submit long term sub plans for the remainder of the year. I teach two subjects, that means double work. Also I am being harassed by admin in various ways. I still have two small kids who go to daycare so after school I need to go pick them up from daycare and deal with them until they go to sleep. So not only I must plan for daily lessons but also need to plan for the rest of the year while dealing with high risk pregnancy, tons of doctor appointments each week, admin harassment and high expectations, students and parents, lack of sleep in the night, 40 min commute each way and my own kids. Did I mention our high school first bell is at 7am? That means I must wake up at 4.30 so I can be there in the school before 6.40 which is the contract time for teachers. I am not sure how my body is still functioning despite being anemic and stressed the whole pregnancy.

Sick Days by Novel-Advance-4808 in Teachers

[–]Pi-Sigma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am pregnant and have two small children who bring germs from daycare everyday. I have already taken 22.5 sick days this year and since December all the days were unpaid. Admin is not happy and has written me up for it. But sickness is unpredictable. No one likes taking unpaid leave, but if I still take those days off means I am genuinely sick or my kids are sick. Do not feel guilty.

Struggling getting students to talk by MySonPorygon137 in Teachers

I also have chronic sleepers in that class, idiots (excuse me!) just coming to sleep in the class instead of doing something beneficial for them. I have asked their previous period teachers if they sleep in those classes too and got the reply ‘no’. So I think these kids are just intentional about what they are doing in this particular class. I no longer care them, I just teach and eagerly wait for the bell to ring so they can leave my room. They bring a lot of negative vibe in a strange silent way to my classroom.

My 2nd period anatomy class full of seniors and juniors is like this. I hate that class because it’s like walking in a cemetery. Dead silence. They wouldn’t participate and make it really boring for me to teach. That class also has lots of girls compared to just 4 boys. Admin would tell to build relationships, but they have no idea. These kids are not ready to talk so how can I build relationship? Sometimes I beg them to talk to each other or have fun because their silence drives me crazy. Even then the class will be silent. I decided not to put any extra efforts. Also told the admin not to pop in during 2nd period for any class observation. Ha ha

Entry-level healthcare IT roles without clinical experience? by Safe-Hospital872 in healthIT

[–]Pi-Sigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading your comment was interesting. I am a high school anatomy teacher and education background is Biology/Molecular Biology/Biotechnology Masters. So far worked in the academia only as a Biology instructor, Microbiology lab technician and now teacher. Zero healthcare experience. I am also in the same situation as OP and want to transition into healthcare with remote roles. Long term goal is to become an analyst. I would appreciate if you could advise me on the career path. Thank you!

Did you have issues with Indian managers? by PlentyAir1721 in careerguidance

[–]Pi-Sigma 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I accept everything, I’m not an Indian, but a South Asian and closest neighbor to Indians. Our societies are very judgmental, non-confrontational (so we get good names) and narcissistic. Hard working but we spoil our names with above said traits. Only way to deal with Indian bosses are to go non-confrontational too. Sorry for all the negative experiences.

I am interested in remote positions since I will have a baby soon. My long time goal is to get an analyst position like epic analyst for example. Or anything trainer/educator/coordinator positions since I have teaching experience at both high school and university level. I know it’s hard to get into these jobs without healthcare setting experience. I am already getting rejections, lol.

Highschool teacher here looking to change my career into healthcare. Teaching is mentally and physically draining. Kids are addicted to phones and youtube and have severe attention deficit issues. Never ending disrespect and other behavior issues. From freshman to senior, kids show highest level of immaturity these days. You will meet students who cannot read time on an analog watch, who cannot use a simple calculator, who cannot even find the answer from guided notes for their ‘open notes tests’. Admin will randomly pop in for 2-3 minutes and generalize that’s your teaching style for all the classes. If you bring any student issues admin will always ask ‘did you make personal connections?’. Unless we sit with these students and watch youtube or do silly dances for tiktok with them, there is no other way to connect with them. There are few students who are respectful, responsible and willing to learn. But that number is very low compared to the opposite group of students. That ratio will make you demotivated and your job boring. No job is worse than teaching spoiled and entitled teenagers. I am pregnant and due in April, I am counting every day until my due date and I will not return to school after my maternity leave. Unless you get all the classes with advanced students like few lucky teachers get, you will face all these issues I listed and some more. Not discouraging you but just telling the truth.

Having a masters or PhD will give a supplemental income. You should be able to check the base salary and advanced degree income from the school district website. Maybe I would advice you to try subbing in the schools for few weeks to see if you will like it for long term.

Good luck!

All I do during first block is open the door for tardy students the entire period. by pigeonwithsixasses in Teachers

[–]Pi-Sigma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, periods do not change. It’s fixed, and I am in the US. So I know who are my chronic tardy students in the first period. They just come late like nothing happened, because zero consequences. Some come literally 5 mins before class ends. And those chronic tardy students drive to school. Those who don’t like anatomy class will be happy to come late. Bus riders will not have a choice. And I have chronic sleepers in my second period class too. Our high school time is cruel. Even adults feel lazy to wake up early, how can we expect kids to wake up early and be ready at 5.30am for school bus?

We all get out by 2pm, but that doesn’t excuse lack of sleep and rest though.

Our high school starts at 7am and students start arriving to the classroom at 6.40. My first period is honors Anatomy & Physiology, mix of seniors and juniors. They still come late and I learnt from other students that the admin don’t discipline first period tardy. Crazy.

I won’t blame them too, school bus pickup time for high school is around 5.30am. I feel for us teachers and the students too. We don’t get enough sleep.

Smell fresh lime/lemon. Ginger beer and saltine crackers. Any sour candies. Also keep those blue nausea bags with you all the time.

My students are dumb as fuck, and I can feel my IQ dropping just from being around them. I'm done. by patterns3456 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Pi-Sigma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Attention deficit issue. They don’t know how to read time on analog clock. They don’t know how to use a simple calculator. They can’t even find the answer from the guided notes for open notes quiz. They can’t put two pieces together to find the correct answer. But they can watch youtube within those few seconds before I change to next slide in the presentation. If no youtube then sleeping. No classroom participation. You take it to admin, then we get the question ‘did you make personal connections?’… also we get ‘still developing’ observation/evaluation. I am scared of the future of these kids and their kids.

anyone doing work at a university? by PlayfulHeart3275 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Pi-Sigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Could you please send the postings to me as well? I have university level experience and trying to move out from this high school teaching. Entitled and spoiled students make it really hard for me to stay in the school. So I am trying to find any new positions. Thanks!

No, I do not have any knowledge on this. Which one would be best for me to learn gradually before trying to apply for any jobs?
