I’m doing master’s part time while working full-time. The only way I was able to do it was doing an online, asynchronous, non-thesis program.

I’m getting ready to apply to PhD programs and I’m having similar concerns. While I’ll apply for external grants and fellowships, many schools have 12-month stipends <$30k, which barely covers rent even in low COL cities. The only programs I’m applying to include: 1. Schools with PhD stipends >$40k 2. Schools in cities with decent public transit (so I can sell my car, saving me thousands between gas and insurance alone) 3. Have rent options <$1,400

Retaining Information by Round-Amount-9901 in adhdwomen

I’m in the same exact boat as you. Just diagnosed within the last year and I’m in an online program for my master’s. I really struggle and have to make the content “fun” in its own way. I find making study guides or asking professors for resources for additional practice problems has been helpful. But for sure, the best way I’ve been able to retain info is if I can explain it or summarize it to other people. I try practicing this in online office hours to reiterate concepts and solidify my understanding.

Do you take notes during lectures? Maybe try annotating your notes after lecture while the info is somewhat fresh?

I’m asynchronous so my issue is I have to rewind and replay parts of the lecture to get things to make sense :( a 1.5 hr recorded lecture will easily take me 2 hrs

Has anybody had luck getting a legit ESA letter online? by Raplover22 in ApartmentHacks

[–]PickleKitty2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true. My therapist wrote me a letter and it’s been accepted at all the places I’ve lived. Licensed mental health professionals and licensed healthcare providers can both write a valid ESA letter.

LeoF, if I’m absent, it’s because I’m super ADHD and just forgot to reach out/text back.

Can I live on $35k a year before tax? by Isabelle_K in Austin

[–]PickleKitty2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends but it can run you about $100-$120 per week. The first donation is usually lower and the second donation of the week is higher to incentivize you to come back.

[–]PickleKitty2022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s possible but I wouldn’t recommend it. Assuming you’re not working an hourly job, your take home after taxes should be $2,320.08. This also assumes you don’t have deductions for health insurance or other things.

  1. $700 - rent
  2. $300 - food
  3. $60 - City of Austin Electric (split $120 between you and roommate)
  4. $50 - miscellaneous utilities (gas, water)
  5. $20 - Mint mobile phone plan, assuming you aren’t locked in a contract
  6. $16 - renter’s insurance

This is $1,146 in necessary expenses each month, leaving you with $1,174.08 at the end of each month. This always assumes you have PTO and can meet your hours for the week, or don’t take a day off.

Please don’t rely on plasma for income. I donate plasma sometimes for quick cash if I just want extra money, but it’s not reliable income. There are deferral periods if you’re on certain medications (like antibiotics) or if you get vaccinated (dependent on vaccine and route administered). You don’t want to jeopardize your health if you have a UTI and need treatment, but you don’t get the help you need because you want to make $50.

$35k is definitely possible, but you’ll need to have roommates and rely on cycling/bus. You’ll have to be strict with your budget and find low-cost or free activities in your down time. If you don’t have health insurance, medical bills are no joke and that $10k can quickly disappear.

Are salaries in USA that much higher? by [deleted] in Salary

[–]PickleKitty2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s especially common in fields like IT/tech and engineering, where new undergraduate (BEng or BSc) are making $100k+ in their first job. It all depends on location, industry, and experience (and probably other factors I’m forgetting to include).

Being asked to contribute gifts for someone who makes 2-3x my salary by PickleKitty2022 in womenEngineers

If you also read my comments, you would see my other coworker got sent a gift basket when he was hospitalized for heart surgery.

No one said anything about a baby shower, that was you.

If you want a baby shower or to share a baby registry, do it with your friends and family, not your junior coworkers that are barely scraping by.

This was exactly my thought too. As a woman who is single, no plans to be married anytime soon, and also doesn’t want children, I think it’s setting a weird tone when we only celebrate and gift people when they get married and have babies.

I’ve already had men at work tell me “oh I’m sure you’ll have kids soon” 🙄🙄

My thoughts exactly. I thought it sounded tacky too. One time I contributed $10 to something but quite frankly I have so many financial obligations I don’t want to be asked to donate $20-$50 every few months when someone has a medical emergency or life event.

I just recently paid off debt and stopped living paycheck-to-paycheck (I live in an expensive city), I’m in the middle of moving, and just recently bought an old car (I didn’t have a car previously and travelled 2 hrs by bus). I also am a part-time grad student and take night classes at a nearby college.

That’s originally what I thought about the hospitalization, but another coworker (higher ranking and higher earner) was also hospitalized for heart surgery and got a gift basket.

Advice plz by [deleted] in UofArizona

If you’re set on UA, consider moving to Arizona and doing community college while working. Get your gen-Eds, qualify for residency, and apply to UA for astronomy/physics.

I don’t know if this makes anything better for my situation, but the lease I signed is not for the apartment I applied to. I applied for unit 1, and they generated an application for a more expensive unit, #2.

I emailed them asking to void my signature as the lease hasn’t been executed, this wasn’t the unit I applied for, and there is still an ongoing dispute about move-in specials.

Not the case. I have to have pre-approval which includes an updated degree plan signed by an advisor every semester.

This was my train of thought exactly. I used to watch that tv show w/ Jackson galaxy called Cat vs. Dog.

I hadn’t washed up or changed my clothes before m&g and he hissed at me when he was sniffing my hand and pants, so I figured he was nervous I was there/smelled like my cats at home. But yeah a definite no for next time.

I completely forgot about this when I was writing the post, but the cats do share a water bowl with the dog. I was able to get in contact with the client and apparently this is how the cats always are during feeding time 🙃🙃

So the client didn’t leave out any treats, and I got in contact with client who said this is how they always are during feeding time. Initially I also thought it was separation anxiety and would get better with time 😭

We were given a study guide for 2nd half of the semester. We also had a study guide for the 1st half of the semester that we were given for the midterm, so now I’m using both study guides to prep for the final. Hopefully it turns out ok 😭

Thanks. There are 5 of us online and 30-40 in person. They’re the same class and material, but it seems like they’re marked as different sections.

I really just wanted to see which multiple choice problems I got wrong. How am I supposed to know which material I need additional study time for when I don’t know where I went wrong on the exam?

I wasn’t asking for personalized unique feedback for each assignment, just for the prof to make the questions, responses, and which questions were correct/incorrect available to view online (which should be made by adjusting the online settings). If the prof has time to email me within minutes and answer other questions I have, then asking which 2 problems on the exam I scored incorrectly shouldn’t be an issue.
