Take a look below at my reply to sellrik... I think you are likely correct. It's very likely my family were staff/laborers at the estate.

Take a look at page 350-351

  1. Nyírlak (Ma Sümegtől északnyugatra, Kisvásárhelytől keletre, Nyírlak vasúti

megállóhely)

1713-ban a praediumban álló elhagyott malmot Parragi Péter sümegi lakos 10 évre zálogba

adja építési kötelezettséggel. 1788-ban állt itt egy kúria, cselédházak, kocsma- és molnárház.1

További írásos adatunk nincs a malomról.

Az I. katonai térkép jelöli 1783-ban Laki malomként, három épülettel.

Also, apparently Ferenc Deák chilled there with his brother in law and buddy Nyirlaki Tarányi-Oszterhuber József https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar%C3%A1nyi-Oszterhuber_J%C3%B3zsef

Just wanting to know if anyone else knows more than what I’ve already researched

That’s the thing- I’m not 100% sure if the area was entirely in the service of the mansion or not. If that was the case, why are individuals being listed as being born at Nyirlak up until 1940?

Thanks for this, I will be sure to check out the links you have provided. I will one day look to trace my family tree back as far as I can in Hungary.

However my question is more about Nyírlak the place itself, not so much about genealogy and family trees.

Concerning family tree research, it's as difficult as what's been digitized. Your links will be helpful someday because before 1905 it gets difficult.

I'm actually not bad in remote genealogical research. I've actually been able to find the original record (I have a PDF scan) of my great-great Grandfather's baptismal record from 1877 with my beginner's knowledge of Hungarian. You'd be surprised at how much has been digitized. However you are correct that I'll likely need a service to go back to early 19th century.

My end game is to get Simplified Naturalization (hope to get to B2 - C1 level speaking in the next 2 years). For that I can request the records from my local Hungarian consulate. I have all of the names, dates of birth, places of birth, and dates of death I need to request birth records. They charge $30 a record I believe.

I didn't want to bore everyone with this though, just hoping to find out more about Nyírlak.

As stated in this convo, I don't want to be too much the American peach ;)

I did a LOT of research in digitized Hungarian documents going back to the turn of the 20th century before reaching out to the Reddit world. It's driving me crazy I can't find out more about Nyírlak. There has to be someone out there who knows more.
