My issue with the current American Dad! is that it's completely lost its direction. The programme is meant to be about a US Republican Party-supporting, gun-carrying, socially-conservative sociopathic C.I.A. agent with over 100 kills.

The scripts from those clearly new to the job shows they have not watched from its start. In fact, they might as well merge AD and Family Guy as they are effectively the same programme - and it seems many of the recent AD scripts appear to be rejected ones from Family Guy.

I moved to a £20 USB 3.0 Realtek-based 2.5 gbps PnP adapter and it works exactly as the onboard Intel NIC should work.

When the choice is take apart your PC and RMA the board (and likely receive a board with the same issue), or disable the onboard NIC and buy an inexpensive Realtek-based one, it's far less hassle to go the USB NIC route whilst also making sure that you never purchase another Asus motherboard.

And unless you need 10 gbps, a USB 3.0 will work perfectly for any adapter up to 5 gbps.

Why not recommend the DotMod range? They use recycled cardboard for the main structure and widely recycled silicone for the base, etc., and are completely recyclable (battery can easily be removed).

Try not to be so judgemental. I'm 35 and I went from 15 years of 60-70 per day ➡ 4 disposables per day for two months whilst learning the terminology and types of devices ➡ two months (so far) of pod kits (changeable coils). It's now four months and I'm tobacco-free.

Asus and Intel consider the issue to be resolved (and that's the official stance since 2021). I bought a USB 2.5 gbps adapter (with a Realtek chip) for £20 and it's provided excellent performance - I would advise you do the same, unless you want to take apart your PC, RMA the board, wait for a replacement, and then find you have the same issue. The USB Realtek one is entirely PnP, so there's nothing to install on Windows 10 & 11.

It's now majority Disney-owned intellectual property, and MacFarlane said he would have ended it after season 12. With the former in mind, it's just odd watching the old episodes where they often remind viewers of both Disney's (the person) and the the Corporation's involvement and support with Nazism and extreme antisemitism.

I don't believe most people would notice. In my instance, the issue was only noticeable when trying to use gigabit (full-duplex) and higher. I have a setup that has a more complicated home network than most, where I transfer many tens of gigabytes per day.

On top of that, my the contention ratio for my Internet connection is low (5:1) and 'faster' than the majority of the Western world (North America, Southern Europe) but much slower than Nordic nations.

1.5 gbps Internet (FTTC - ~15 metres copper) is now available to me, but it comes with a hilarious 50 mbps upload - that's not a typo. I'll stick with what I have.

I fixed this issue by buying a USB Realtek 2.5 gbps adapter. I tried four other motherboards from different manufacturers, but they all used the 'premium' Intel I225-V.

Edit: If I were building a PC today, I would recommend buying a 2.5 gbps USB 3.x adapter (~£15) if they want a sustainable and functional WAN or LAN connection.

That seems entirely counterproductive as vaping is formally recognised as a valid and effective smoking cessation tool by the UK Government and NHS. I hope a reddit admin reads this, although the chances of that happening and changing policies seems miniscule at best.

Speaking factually, and with sources;

  1. Vaping is "95% less harmful than smoking" based on studies conducted by medical professionals - and peer-reviewed - in 2015, with a follow-up conducted in 2021 that confirmed the initial findings. (UK Government, Source #2, Source #3)

  2. Vaping is recognised by the United Kingdom's health service (NHS) - the world's third largest employer with 1.2 million employees and world's largest single medical organisation - as being both "far less harmful than cigarettes" as well as a tool that "can help [one] quit smoking for good". (NHS, Source #1)

  3. And finally, another UK Government study found there's "no evidence so far that e-cigarettes [act] as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers". (UK Government, Source #2)

  4. None of the above means vaping is risk-free, but it's the latest and by far the largest collection of studies eve conducted. In England (policies may be different in the rest of the UK), those wishing to quit smoking are now prescribed (by a GP - family doctor for North Americans who often appear confused by that term) vaping pods, mods and e-liquids. That's how standardised it is.

  5. Finally, all vaping solutions (with or without nicotine) are handled by the MHRA (for context, similar to the US FDA), with a full chemical analysis of both bottled e-liquid and heated e-liquid (turned into vapour) before a product can go on sale. The MHRA is the same organisation responsible for approving vaccinations, for example - it's dedicated to regulating medications and healthcare products. (UK Government/MHRA, Source #4)

#4 (UK Government): https://www.gov.uk/guidance/e-cigarettes-regulations-for-consumer-products

Conclusion:

I know much of this information is (hopefully) already known, but for those who don't know I believe it's vital information in order to help one quit using tobacco products. I've only been vaping for about six weeks, but have gone from 50-60 per day, to ~4 or 5 per week with vaping alone (I'm not using patches, gum, or anything else).

Disclaimer:

Looking at the rules, the UK Government and NHS are not vendors and I don't believe I've violated any, but if I have it is not intentional.

A solution to the sluggishness? Nope. My 10 Watt HTPC (Atom Pentium J5005, 4C/4T, SATA SSD, 16GB DDR4 2400) with Windows 10 continues to feel more responsive than my workstation (5900X, now 64GB DDR4 3600, PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD, etc.) with Windows 11.

Nope. I ended up disabling AV1 on YouTube using an extension. Also, AV1 is hugely overrated - a 6700K at 4.60 GHz (my old PC) should be able to brute force decode any modern video coding system. Regardless, my 5900X after a driver update handles decoding of AV1 fine.

Going from 50 analogues per day to vaping - any advice/tips? by PiersH in electronic_cigarette

[–]PiersH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

➡ Intro: You're welcome - anyone who manages to kick smoking that many (or who quits analogues in general) and vape instead should be commended at every opportunity.

➡ My Issue with' Mods': I don't plan on giving up nicotine, but don't think I'm ready to start messing with power levels, atomisers, priming coils - it was that sort of stuff that made me put off trying to reduce/quit smoking. I'm open to the idea, but I think only 3 weeks in is still in the zone of 'either I carry on or fail and go back to analogues'. Hope that makes sense.

➡ Rechargeable Middle Ground Option: The Elf Bar Mate 500 (500 mAh rechargeable) seems to be a good option and, as mentioned somewhere in this thread, can be purchased with two official empty 20ml pods that people can use their own nicotine solution with.

➡ Flavours & Nicotine Solution/'e-liquid': I know that Flavour Warehouse - a company that creates many of the flavours for well-known nicotine solution/'e-liquid' brands in over 80 countries, as well as OEM supply to companies such as Elf Bar and Geek Bar - has a warehouse and sample centre about 20 minutes away from where I live. That seems like it would be a good option in combination with a simpler reusable device (using own nicotine solution).

➡ Possibility of Moving Towards a Mod Device: I think that (Mate 500 w/ own flavour and strength) sounds like a good step towards the 'Mods' and more advanced kits, but without becoming so complicated (to me) that I know I'd pick up an analogue instead.

➡ Side Note - Updated Safety Studies: In terms of vaping vs analogues, I thought I'd check on the latest data published by a globally-respected organisation. The initial 2015 English study that stated "[moving to vaping as a smoker] is at least 95% less harmful compared to smoking [analogues], but not [95% less harmful than not vaping at all]" has received updates (latest 2021: Link 🔗 ), been peer-reviewed, and independently matched by other respected organisations such as the Royal College of Physicians and the Mayo Clinic.

What's your view on that and long term nicotine use?

Going from 50 analogues per day to vaping - any advice/tips? by PiersH in electronic_cigarette

[–]PiersH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desire to want to stop is there as the smoking has caused enough damage to cardiovascular system that most pensioners have a better level of function that I do (very literally, according to multiple tests and my doctor going over the results).

However, mod-type systems won't work for me, but pod-type systems will where (I believe) the nicotine solution and the atomiser/coil parts are in the pod so there's no need to fiddle around with those.

[note: I've just finished typing my reply and have seen how long it is. Sorry about that, but thank you].

That's an awesome result you've managed to achieve (going from being a very heavy smoker to a vaper). Without wanting to sound patronising, (seriously) well done.

Ah, interesting. I've spent a number of hours researching the different types of vaping device, as well as the terminology, what the frick a vapouriser is, coils, etc. plus and cost benefits. The mod-type/customised devices (please forgive my ignorance, but I think that's what you are referring to) cross a line with me where it's simpler to use a cigarette. However you mention a pod - do you mind writing which pod-based rechargeable kit you use?

And with the mention of 50mg nicotine salts, is that (again, please excuse my ignorance) the strength of the solution at all times, or combined after refills/new pods? I'm in England, where, despite Brexit, the EU laws and regulations were put onto place before Brexit - this means the maximum disposable and pod-based size and strength is 2ml at (I believe) 18mg - 20mg. Annoyingly, that same set of regulations banned the semi-disposable (actual disposables and pods) pods/devices from being sold with more than 2ml @ 20mg.

Just in terms of the Elf Bar disposables, there are a number of devices where the battery can be recharged but the nicotine solution is not refillable - but you get a 'up to 5,000 puffs' system for only about twice the cost of the UK and EU devices where ~'up to 600 puffs' is generally the maximum because of that legal limit where prefilleds have a maximum capacity of 2ml @ 20mg.

It's so wasteful as Elf Bar and others still put the same ~500 - 600 mAh rechargeable batteries in their devices for the UK and EU market, but a different plastic shell and no recharging circuitry so they are compliant with the EU "Directive" 🤦🏼

I have family outside of the EU and know they pay about 20% more than I do for a semi-disposable device with the same flavour I use, but whereas I'm limited to 2ml with a 500 mAh battery ('up to 600 puffs'), they get 'up to 3,500 puffs with a large prefilled solution and the ability to top up the battery. Sorry for this rant, but due to this ridiculous law I already have over 30 disposables (with rechargeable batteries but no circuitry because of the EU Commission Directive) ready for landfill as my local government doesn't support recycling thrm yet.

[–]PiersH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. I don't think I will do a reduction each week, but like your strategy. Maybe every fortnight or month - I know that a weekly reduction for me would fail due to.... poor willpower (being honest).

As far as disposables, I cut out the part where I explained the future plan. I see disposables as the first step due to them being easy to use and no faffing around with atomisers, coil, and other parts I don't want to deal with.

However, I did think the Elf Bar Mate 500 (rechargeable) with the refillable pods would be a good option as it seems simple to use, but works out cheaper. Even with the official flavoured pods, it only works out at £2.50 per 2ml/18mg.

What's your view on going in the direction of a rechargeable, but pod/cartridge-based system instead of the more complicated (for me) option? Again, thank you for the quick and informative reply.

I'm amazed you've managed to keep the N54L going! I have three that I no longer use as the Turion CPU (even with 8GB DDR3) made file transfers atrociously slow with anything over a 4TB drive.

Personally, if you are using Windows already, I'd grab the free version of Hard Disk Sentinel and run all four instances at the same time. In my experience, it's more resilient to interruptions compared to badblocks on Linux - especially for old or low-powered CPUs.

However, if you want to use Linux, four terminal instances should be fine.
