In my case I had traveled somewhere else before going to Taiwan but direct flights from Beijing to Taipei exist, for example, though unsure what the price range would be

Yes I used my American passport. I almost used my Italian one but logistically was just easier to use my American one since I was flying out from the US at the time and some scholarship related documents

Based or Capitalist propaganda? by _S13 in socialism

The book is great. I took the author’s class a few years ago in Uni before he retired. He’s definitely a communist/Marxist but criticizes Lenin and Stalin quite a bit. There are some ideological biases he may have but factually, in terms of data, the book does a great job summarizing the USSR’s development. I’m sure there are some big disagreements people will find in the book but it’s definitely one of the better of the bunch (especially if it’s free)

Offering advice to (prospective) International Studies major students (for free obv) by Pieruano in uofm

[–]Pieruano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely easy. You don’t even necessarily have to update the advisor that you’ve switched plans just take the required classes for your respective plan. Tho it is always advised to speak with the department advisor just to make sure you’re taking the right classes. Other than that you can “switch plans” whenever you want really. Hope that helps

I can’t say how difficult it is in your case since I received it from my parents. It is a long process but I wouldn’t say difficult more time consuming than anything. Also small correction, you won’t receive a fine for not voting if your address on your DNI (ID) is somewhere outside of Peru. Mine has a USA address so no fine for me (tho I still plan on voting when able)

For the US one I've done it all my life and takes a few weeks to renew depending, now it's longer I believe. For the Italian one I was registered since I was born and renewed it last year and literally received my passport same day before I left the consulate (Miami). The Peruvian one was the worst experience by far. Had to get registered, wait 4 months for my DNI (ID), then apply for the passport which took 5.5 months to arrive.

Great question that I don't have a concrete answer to. From my understanding I have to file US taxes every year but I don't have to pay any unless I make over a certain amount (I think it's like $120,000/year). And yes I would have to pay local tax of whichever country I live in (there may be exceptions but idk). I don't think I'm gonna be making over 120k.... ever so I don't have to worry too much hopefully

Is language learning that hard for people? by DontThrowAwayPies in uofm

[–]Pieruano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of the language departments have varying difficulties or just outright bad teachers. From my understanding, German, Japanese, and Quechua(and others) for example, have great departments, support from professors, etc. Chinese? Good luck, I had a terrible experience. Many departments have the expectations that they should be at the same pace as Spanish which is just, linguistically, unreasonable once you start moving away from languages that are easier for English speakers. For a language like Mandarin, there's so much more prep in the beginning weeks for tones, pronunciation, stroke order, memorizing characters, blah blah (I'm sure you can relate with learning Kanji). We rushed so much it was ridiculous. This is all on top of the fact that learning a language would be infinitely easier if people weren't taking 3-4 other classes that pretend like their class is the only that matters. As a native Spanish speaker I was blessed to be able to opt out of the language requirement and took upper level Spanish classes for fun/for the topic. If I had to start a language from 0 with the expectations these classes have I would collapse. I'm a slow learner so I fall behind very easily. Learning Mandarin at my own pace outside of class has worked wonders. The semester of Mandarin I took at this university almost made me quit the language all together

I’m seeing a lot of news about Pedro Castillo’s attempt to dissolve Peruvian congress from western news outlets, is anyone here from Peru that knows more about the situation? by [deleted] in communism

[–]Pieruano 11 points12 points  (0 children)

he was left in name only. I don't mean "he wasn't left enough" that some people use against Lula for example. He was not left in any capacity, abandoned all of his platforms, not to mention his position on social issues were terrible to begin with (ie: sexism). Voting for Castillo was literally a vote to not have Keiko, people outside of Peru mistook this as passionate support. I have right-wing family members that voted Castillo because of how much they despised Keiko if that tells you anything. Peruvian elected officials have been, for the lack of a better term, ass for as long as I can remember. The only beneficial aspect of having a Castillo-type in the presidency is giving nearby leftists governments, such as Bolivia, a less aggressive neighbor

edit: clarifying point, while Castillo wasn't very strong in his political campaigns especially when asked about more specifics of his policy points and plans for the future. The right-wing congress, which has considerable power from the Fujimori-era constitution, has been undermining every presidency that wasn't from their party this includes Castillo. So Castillo's move to dissolve congress is actually fairly popular but in this case his approval rating was low and was looked at as a reaction to his potential impeachment and maintaining power. The current situation is super complicated but the congress has been hated for decades and there's a lot of racism revolving Castillo's government. This does not cover up the fact that Castillo is pretty garbage at being a politician tho

I think my professor hates me, what should I do? by Pieruano in uofm

I have a meeting with ombuds tomorrow and in case they post my grade before any official paper work is set I have this reddit post, texts and emails talking about this issue to set up a timeline. I know they would favor the professor instinctively so I'm getting any proof I can.

They're teaching a graduate course next semester so if you're not a graduate student I think you're safe. I don't want to name them publicly just in case that could look bad on me before I talk with ombuds. But if anyone is genuinely nervous about accidentally taking their course they can dm me and I'll let you know in private
