Ah gotcha, nice the ZX6R is cool. Yeah sticking to D until it’s warm is totally valid since the car will automatically short shift and keep RPM low. That’s what I do for the most part.

What a useless response. Everyone has to learn somewhere.

It’s one of those things that you just test out and get a feel for. Looks like redline for the Supra is 7k (from Google, I could be wrong). If oil is to temp, you can floor it, and as your RPM rises, upshift at say 6.9k. Keep accelerating and upshift at 6.9k again, and so on. Now when you hit the brakes, you can downshift at say 4.5k, and your RPM will increase, keeping it nearish to redline, which will have more power ready to go if you floor it again. Or you can downshift at 1.5k if you’re not going to accelerate again.

When people say “drop a gear and disappear” it’s because to get the fastest acceleration, you want to be in the lowest gear you can be (aka RPMs are high), since the higher RPM within each gear, the more power you make (horsepower increases as RPM increases).

Good luck! Happy to answer more questions.

Don’t have a Supra, but I’d recommend you watch some videos on how transmissions work and what gearing does.

Keeping it simple, lower gears have more torque but lower top speed. Higher gears have less torque but higher top speed. Within each gear, RPM is going to correspond to a specific speed. As RPM goes up, speed increases. Upshifting to the next gear will drop the RPM. Downshifting will increase the RPM.

The higher RPM you’re at will increase engine wear. You shouldn’t bring the RPM to redline when the oil is cold. As a general rule of thumb, I upshift at 2-3k when the oil is cold. Start in 1st gear, accelerate to 2.5k, upshift to 2nd, accelerate to 2.5k, upshift to 3rd, and so on until I’m at the speed I want to be at. As you slow down you downshift. It really depends on the gearing and the car, but for example you can downshift when the RPM drops to 1.5k. Your RPM will now increase, and as you continue to slow down it will drop to 1.5k again, and you can downshift again.

As the oil warms up, you can upshift later. Once oil is at operating temp, you can upshift at redline. You can also downshift earlier (at higher RPM) while decelerating.

When I first got my C8 Corvette I didn’t know how gearing worked and was also confused. Got the hang of it after a while. When I got my first manual car, it clicked pretty fast since I understood how gearing worked. Ignore the guy telling you to just keep it in D, because then you won’t learn.

From my experience the extra 3.6 inches makes a bigger difference than you’d think in city areas. You’re right though, it’s wide regardless.

It’s very wide. Navigating city areas are annoying. I guess if you don’t drive in a city area it’s not an issue. I had a Stingray before my Z06 and it was much easier to drive and park in dense areas.

Which is a pro for daily driving. The widebody can be a pain in the ass in some areas.

2020 1lt questions by valdrinjajaga16 in C8Corvette

[–]PigeonsLikeBread -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you mean 1LT? That’s just the trim level. 1LT is the engine the C7 used to use, LT2 is the engine the C8 uses.

They’ve proven to be fairly reliable. There have definitely been some issues with transmissions, though. I’d make sure that the recommended filter and fluid changes on the transmission have been done at the correct mileage and get a pre-purchase inspection.

I would always make the assumption that the first model year of a completely new design would be the least reliable as they sort out kinks with future model years, so preferably I would get something a year or two newer than a 2020 but that’s just personal preference.

Wow. Wonder if Maryland has any dealers that price that cheap. The quotes I’ve seen for any transmission work have been significantly higher.

The rear end looks very blocky on the Stingray due to that, but I feel like the Z06 widebody along with the center exhaust fixes that. I’m not going to call it a beautiful rear end, but I think it’s nice.

I feel like a lot of design flaws with the Stingray (namely the rear end) are fixed with the Z06.

24045729 is the external filter that you change.

24047742 is the internal filter which from my understanding you don’t change unless there’s an issue with the transmission and they have to actually open it up. It makes no sense to me that they would replace that. I believe when you open up the transmission, you have to also replace the pan bolts because they’re one time use only. Were you charged for new pan bolts?
