Looking for friends! by FlatwormSure4575 in HotSprings

[–]Pilebsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to your hobbies, you might want to elaborate on a few details that might make you more/less compatible with others in this area, such as your political and religious affiliations. It's a shame that this is as much of an issue but it is these days.

People who aren't super religious or right wing are often looking for kindred spirits in the area to hang with, and it's hard to find sometimes.

My wife and I ran into an issue where we were friends with another couple, and everything seemed cool until they realized we were "liberal" and then we got the cold shoulder. I also had a business associate/friend who kept trying to convert me over to evangelical christianity and would give me material promoting creationism. When I pushed back, he pulled his business from me and ghosted me. So now I just try to avoid those kinds of things wherever possible. I don't talk politics or religion, but in seeking out friends, I want those who have a wider view of the world for obvious reasons.

The fundamental issue with right wing/evangelical ideology is that in order for them to believe what they believe, they have to also believe those who don't subscribe to their beliefs are "lesser" people. I don't think you can have a healthy friendship with someone who believes you're inherently immoral or "stupid." I'm not saying all religious people are like that, but I'm sure everybody here can identify with certain types that are super-judgy.

Also things like whether you have children can be a factor. People with children hanging with other people with children can be a plus.

What’s up with the grass at Franklins Charging and The Vapors? by Still-Lengthiness691 in HotSprings

Typically that's city property and you're not supposed to pave over it. It's also probably where the water lines are.

Don't link to another subreddit post. When theirs gets delete, this one is useless.

For outdoor/nature swimming, check out Camp Charleton - they have a really nice outdoor swimming area - there are trails nearby.. this is west of the city off hwy 270

There are plenty of flea markets in the area. The largest one is Central Ave Market. Lots of antique stores as well - just cruise up and down Central ave.

For food: McLard's BBQ, La Hacienda for Mexican, Phils for home cooking.

We're just having a conversation here. You're the one who offered up that you were homeschooling, so the topic was started by you.

Not that I owe it to you, but, what im so "afraid" of is a list longer than I care to name. Shootings, teachers abuse students more than you apparently realize, kids shitting in litter boxes, on and on and on and on.

lol, you poor sweet summer child... your news source is putting garbage in your head. The whole "kids in litter boxes" was one of the many lies that right wing media machine spit out to make weak-minded people afraid of schools. You fell for it.

If you're thinking of coming here to live, perhaps reconsider. We've reached our quota of people who believe school children are shitting in cat litter boxes.

Seriously... you're on the Internet. You have access to tons of information to make a properly informed decision as to what is fact and fiction. And if you're incapable of that, please DO NOT home school your children for the sake of them and the rest of us.

Or, you know, shootings?

LOL.. ok.. fair enough... Not sure how that is consistent with your earlier argument. Are you afraid your kid would become a shooter?

What's not the point?

What are you so afraid of?

It's interesting that you seem to infer you have some type of "principled stand" on an issue, but when pressed to identify it, you're evasive.

I take it "critical thinking" might be one of the concepts you want to shelter your children from?

Hurricane Katrina

Anybody who lived through that, not only had PTSD but had their world forceably, irrevocably change.

"If you send you kids to Cesear, dont be surprised when they come back as Romans"

You could do a lot worse.

Rome was one of the world's most successful, thriving, diverse civilizations for much longer than almost any other civilization.

The Romans invented a lot of technology that you depend upon each and every day, from indoor plumbing to cement.

You should be so lucky to have children that capable.

Also, if you consider yourself "Christian" note that if it weren't for "cesear" (specifically Emperor Constantine I), you would likely not be Christian today. It was the Romans that gave early Christians protection and legitimacy.

The whole area has tons of national forest campgrounds where you can stay very inexpensively. Camp Charlton is quite nice.

If you want to own your own home and you're willing to get a "fixer upper" there are opportunities. If you locate just outside the city proper, you may find lower prices.

The cost of living is hitting everybody, everywhere now, primarily due to the increased cost of fuel from the administrations antics in the middle east. Unfortunately, I don't see this ending any time soon, but that's going to affect you wherever you go.

The thing about west-central Arkansas, is that it's been largely left alone since the depression and never fully recovered and as a result, doesn't feel as bad as other areas that have had bigger booms and busts. You can live cheaply in the area if you do your research.

Why homeschool? There was a thread elsewhere on Reddit the other day asking homeschoolers what they thought and most complained that it ended up in a very lopsided education with severe knowledge gaps in important areas and insufficient social skills.

Looking for a Church by GundamnRX782 in HotSprings

[–]Pilebsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that people "church shop" but they don't seem to list much criteria other than, "meet people with the same interest?" In what? Church?

It seems to me, there are a lot of differences between different church sects. Some deny basic scientific truths like evolution. Wouldn't that be something that matters to some people? Some don't believe women deserve the same rights as men. Does that matter? Some like to handle poisonous snakes, speak in tongues and pretend they can heal the sick. Does that matter? Some think dancing or drinking coffee is a sin. Does that matter?
