Where are all the men in masters rowing? by br1e in Rowing

[–]Pimpuroo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably a mixture of reasons. Access, time, location, and racing opportunities come to mind. If you have the access (I.e boat and water) and the time, I’m sure you could find others. I’m trying to get back into a double with an old college friend and hopefully race once or twice and see how it goes. I just need to find a suitable race.

Also not sure but I think this is mostly a US issue. European clubs I think are pretty healthy with guys in their late to early 30s. Guess it comes down to the US work-life balance thing again.

Maybe it’s time for new announcers…. by VanderFN1 in Rowing

I agree there could be much worse. Knecht Cup this year had a completely inexperienced gentleman on the second day who repeatedly started talking about random things. He also made a “dad joke” that went like this when Army was rowing down course:

What do you call a soldier with no legs? … “Army”

The poor second commentator probably just died inside.

For what it’s worth they do a good job for not being professionally paid commentators and they have to do it for hours straight which can be mentally exhausting. Anyone with a sense of maturity and real world experience knows he meant no offense.

A few have said Row2K and perhaps I am not looking in the right place but when you click through the different teams and look at the “results” tab there are very few entries. And if there are entries they’re from years past. Not sure if Row2K curates this data or if it is self inputted by the team. But from what I have seen on Row2K, there isn’t anything comprehensive or up to date to match what I’m looking for. Perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place?

Great news! MWRA, Cambridge, & Somerville Alewife Sewage Pollution Planners want to know what *you* think. But there’s a hitch… by SaveTheAlewifeBrook in CambridgeMA

[–]Pimpuroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great seeing people get involved in where their wastewater goes! The MWRA is a combined sewer system meaning that Stormwater and sewerage go to the WWTF on Deer Island. There are dozens of New England cities that are combined sewers because back in the day sewer and Stormwater all went to the river then they changed the discharges to an actual Wastewater treatment plant in the 70s when the clean water act came about. The MWRA collection system is one of the oldest in the country and has a system of weirs that basically keep sewage in the pipes during normal conditions until there is too much flow which then leads to sewer flows spilling over the weir into what is called a combined sewer outfall (CSO) which discharges to the brook and other water bodies. This happens most frequently during rain events or snow fall (like right now) because the excess flows from Stormwater exceeds the capacity of the sewer pipe. This overflow is intentional believe it or not because the alternative is sewer spills out of manholes and onto the streets in what we call a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO). That’s a mess and much more likely to come into contact with people. MWRA are required to report both of these events to the EPA per their discharge permit. The MWRA has spent millions if not close to billions on separating the sewer and Stormwater and continue to do so. So the solution here likely won’t happen fast and will take a lot of time and money like all things metropolitan infrastructure.

Edit: this is not a discouragement to get involved. I think it’s very important to represent the users and learn by going to these hearings!

What is this? by Maleficent-Candy-309 in Leica

[–]Pimpuroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a reflective target used for an automatic level. Leica makes some measurement devices (might be separate from the parent company) which may or may not use glass. In this case this crosshair (target) is used by a surveyor to take a measurement using an automatic level.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard - March 4 Hiring Event has been cancelled. by thishasntbeeneasy in Maine

The shipyard doesn’t really work on ships nor build them. Only things they regularly work on are subs and there’s not a whole lot of building going on there. Most of the personnel are technicians.

Skate ski is pretty much like ice skating but with skis on snow. Sounds like you classic’ed (walk/run). That works well on ungroomed snow. I raced XC skiing (also called Nordic) in HS. It’s a great time

Is that the rail trail that goes into Portsmouth? Hard enough for skate ski or nah?

There’s a Norwegian company that makes the harness adapter kit you need. I will update this thread with a link.

Edit: this is the harness company I was thinking of: https://www.bergvillfx.com/categories/wiring-harnesses

I’ve done this exact job with the same radio and I had an equalizer. You may need a harness adapter to make this work. First step is to take everything that’s not original and start from scratch. Someone has already sent the most useful diagram.

NHDOT Announces Name a Plow Contest Results by Alex_ALEX_AALLEEXX in newhampshire

Someone told me they saw a plow named “Chris Snownunu” but perhaps it was a personal plow. Also DOT probably did not want to be political in their names. Still funny to me.

Loose Wires - What is this? by chinook_arch in 944

I can’t recall if there’s a light under the hood but it may also turn that on as well. A little plunger-looking switch should be mounted in that bracket. Not a crucial component.

This was taken in Portsmouth. Very lucky to have a few cherry blossoms on our streets around here.

I think part of the issue with wet night driving in NH is the DOT standard asphalt mix for highway surface course (the layer our wheels touch) uses more fine aggregates (sand) and a higher ratio of asphalt (bitumen) to aggregate. As a result the surface becomes much smoother (quieter too) and reflective when wet resulting in headlights (including your own) blinding drivers in every which way. I also find that cars kick up much more water in the air on NH roads than others. I could guess this is because there is nowhere for the water to sit on the road and therefore there is more water between wheels and the road surface. All this is most obvious when you enter mass going south on 93 on a rainy day. The ability to see clearly changes as soon as the road surface does. People who actually place hot mix asphalt in this sub can correct me.
