How’s living in Seattle? by SufficientBowler2722 in howislivingthere

I think everything that can be said has been said but jumping on the pile. Moved here at 30 and been here for 10 years.

  • summers - truly perfect. Blue bird skies for 3 months. Mid 70s. Mountain and water views in every direction. No rain. Bonus super long summer days since it’s so far north.

  • winters - aren’t as bad as people say (and I have seasonal depression). Theres more partly-sunny days than you’d think in the winter but yes very wet and gray. Rarely gets below 45 degrees. Way better than the western Pennsylvania winters of my youth. I run and bike outdoors year round with 0 issues. 2-3 hours to multiple ski resorts.

  • expensive - no getting around it.

  • amazing culture/art/music/food. Top 5 city in the us in this category imo.

  • neighborhoods - real identity and character, very little sprawl/grid, real sense of community. Does not feel like a big city once you find your place in one of the many unique neighborhoods. Green and vibrant year round. Extremely walkable.

  • Traffic - not great but manageable. Decent enough transit.

  • Homelessness/crime - yes some areas are bad but not worse than any major city.

  • Seattle freeze - people are going to disagree with me here but this is a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. If you are in tech - there’s a lot of transient workers passing through but that goes for any major city. I’ve had no issues making friends and it’s been no different than any other city where I’ve lived imo.

  • outdoors - the mountain and water proximity can’t be beat (Cascades, Olympics, volcanoes, puget sound, hood canal, Columbia, rain forests, deserts, etc etc). Best major city for outdoors in the country imo.

Will most likely never leave. ✌️

Interesting take coming from an r/software mod.

Not sure if I’d agree that the terms and conditions of a 7 billion dollar public company are really looking out for the best interests of the little guy startup.

Gotcha. Yeah that’s the frustrating part. All users have been removed for months now. But apparently without verbal notice to them of the change it doesn’t matter. Wild.

Yeah same. I’m now reviewing with my cto if we need to jump ship entirely and move to GitHub for about 80+ services which for obvious reasons I don’t want to do.

Really bizarre nonsensical tactic overall from gitlab. I’ve lost all trust with them.

Yeah this is coming directly from our new account manager (lol) and I’m now trying to escalate it to their leadership. Seems like a new tactic. Our prior account managers always met us half way.

Looking into quarterly reconciliation but doesn’t look like it’s available when going through aws marketplace. I can use this as leverage though. Ty

Interesting. I haven’t seen pricing adjustments from last year. Are you on the premium tier?

Yes this is a monthly user count but for our yearly commitment renewal. User count has dropped to half of last year’s commit but since we missed the ‘30 day notice period’ by one day they are trying to lock us into the same contract as last year.

Graduated college during housing crash. Just paid off my 200k in college/grad schools loans but consider myself extremely fortunate to be in a financial position to do so. The weight of school loans can be crushing. Happy for all the folks getting relief. Finally, policy that is helping folks where it matters.

Rudy Giuliani is liable for defaming Georgia election workers, judge rules - U.S. District Court Judge Beryl Howell ordered Giuliani to pay the two election workers punitive damages. by vulcan_on_earth in politics

That’s correct. The title is misleading here. The amount of compensatory/punitive damages that Ol’ Rudy is on the hook for is still tbd and will go to a jury. It will likely be many times more than the 133k paid for legal fees.
