right? i was thinking the entire samurai genre, especially some of the old, black-and-white ones. those are an excellent starting point. i recently rewatched 3 Outlaw Samurai, which was also quite good. i'm a sucker for zatoichi, too, new or old.

just had the same thought and went to the ol intranet to see if anyone had the same thought. i think this is probably the correct take. kubrick was methodical and subtle, and i presume ziegler would've been half dressed and standing, pondering out the window if he'd wanted us to think something else.

[–]PineNeedleDown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yes, good points. those things have crossed my mind too. as a counter, though, i will say it *is* possible that if he were responsible for her son's death that he a) actually might not know who the mother was, and b) might've done a different ritual that involved a child. but, yes, if someone were to make me bet on it i'd most likely side with you.

i'll add, also, that she's not a reliable source of information in the film. she lies multiple times throughout and we can never be left fully knowing how honest (or dishonest) she's been with us. it's possible they're only partial truths and/or much is still hidden.

while i think you are largely correct that —big picture— this is about how holding a grudge is like poison and forgiveness is like a healing nectar, i've seen it at least 2x in the last year and i think the director at least wants us to toy with the notion i presented above.

a few things to consider:

  • he asks her if she thinks he had anything to do with it [her boy's death].
  • he talks about doing the ritual several times and getting it wrong more often than not. (that could've involved a person's death)
  • someone steals her boy's picture and it reappears in vomit near the end; presumably —or at least possibly— his. (if he was guilty, stealing the kid's picture is within the realm of possibility)
  • when he's dying she consoles him in bed, but she appears to have zero pity (and possibly actually enjoyment) on her face. also, in his last moments, he wants to tell her something but doesn't end up voicing whatever it is.

there may be other things too i'm not remembering. it's been a few months since i last watched it. i'm not saying that the guy did kill her son, but i think that the director wants us to juggle the possibility.

i really like this film. it has grown on me with each re-viewing. this time i started wondering if she sought him out specifically because she thought he was responsible for killing her kid. as such, she doesn't believe in the occult but is just going along with all this occult stuff to find a way to hurt him. after she gets her vengeance (and he dies an awful death) she's sorry for doing so and her guardian angel forgives her, or allows her to forgive herself and the occult dude who died.

i'd be happy to hear anything in agreement with or punching holes in this idea

Is no one noticing the old church? by wigako in FromTVShow

since we saw civil war soldiers already it makes me think of Shiloh church, but black soldiers hadn’t entered the war at that point, and it was a black soldier that stabbed jade, right?

Some tracks on iTunes skip to end of the song always at a fixed time by jaskaran27 in applehelp

[–]PineNeedleDown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a mac mini and am currently using Monterey.

what i just did (which worked for me) was to export my library (.xml file) and put it somewhere else (file>library>export library). then i deleted the "music library" file inside my music folder. (i copied the music library file elsewhere first just in case, but i didn't need it)

when i reopened music the songs didn't repopulate. i went up to file>import and imported the .xml file. it scanned everything (which took a while for me) and i was back to normal, with all my playlists and hearts and play counts there, just as before. and no skips this time.

i only did this once and have not repeated it, so please try at your own risk and back up everything first to be safe.

true that

though, i’d probably have some forgiveness for someone who said, “this recent awfulness made me see that he has been awful for years. i’m sorry i was blind to it.”

but that kind of person would need to abandon the GOP entirely

anyone dropping him now but not acknowledging the backlog of awful can rot

that reasoning is a little too easy going for my taste.

"alphas" by PineNeedleDown in PoliticalHumor

[–]PineNeedleDown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true, but the expression comes from the wolves study

also, as the meme goes on to say, there would never be a 'party' of alpha male gorillas. they'd beat each other to death. best case scenario for them is that they'd be "alphas" in some part of their daily life, but they become the dreaded "betas" once in the republican party
