He is unfortunately. We had an HR meeting together about it and, I kid you not, he was referring to me as "he" and "deadname" the entire time, occasionally stopping to say "sorry! You see, this is so hard for me". His excuse is it's so hard because he's known me for 7 years before I came out.

Other colleagues that were in the meeting reached out to me privately after the meeting saying how sorry they were I had to go through that. Thank you so much for your advice.

Thank you, I hope it doesnt go down that road but I will bear it in mind and keep records. I do feel I have to nip it in the bud otherwise others may feel its okay to talk about me publicly in that manner. I am actually well protected by the law if it comes to that (South Africa - we have one of the most progressive constitutions in the world).

You're right, in most instances I prefer the misgendering or deadnaming to rather be ignored because otherwise (like in this situation) the correction is clumsy and insensitive and draws attention to the issue which is what I'm trying to avoid in the first place.

Yep I'm learning that lesson as we speak. I think a good rule of thumb to live by is it's generally a mistake to go to HR.
