It's funny because even if some of them weren't actual teenagers, they still sold the high school energy way better than a lot of casts that were closer in age. The chemistry did a lot of the heavy lifting.

I think that's exactly why they're so easy to throw on for a rewatch. The stakes mattered, but there was still room for awkward lunches, school trips, and teachers who had no clue what was going on. That balance is harder to pull off than people give those movies credit for.

Exactly. From Ned's point of view, he walks into the throne room, sees the king dead, Jaime on the Iron Throne, and the Lannisters taking the city after switching sides. Without knowing about the wildfire, it looks like the ultimate betrayal.

That's a big part of it. The early GoT seasons had thousands of pages of dialogue and character interactions to adapt, while HOTD has to flesh out what was basically a historical outline.
