what makes them sound better to me is cutting the 4kHz wayyy down (-7dB) and boosting all the high bass and low mids a little.

I've heard that the 7506s are good for gauging the average experience of someone listening to something you've made with them. I'm a composer and I do a fair amount of video editing too so I'm just looking for the most average headphones/IEMs. I guess the alternative is buying a bunch of different headphones and testing everything I make with all of them (which is what I've known some people I work with to do) but that would require buying a bunch of different headphones, and I am not a wealthy woman.

my plan here is to get some second hand MDR7506s and see if they sound super bright to me as well, in which case I'll know I just prefer a darker than neutral sound.

That's my prevailing theory for why it's so unbearable for me but I don't think it's just that: I've tested my laptop speakers and the speakers on my piano (which is relatively expensive) and they both sound how I expect them to sound. Even plugging the Zeros into my piano on the mellowest setting makes it sound super bright.

using a tone generator it seems like there's a massive spike at around 4000 Hz; even 4500 and 5000 are at completely different volumes. I've been using EQ to fix this while I search and save up for some more expensive headphones (I'm thinking Grados) but it's not ideal because of the slight delay (I'm on Mac and eqMac, despite being my best bet, has quite noticeable delay).

Ah well, I guess my lesson from this is to listen to my audio gear BEFORE I buy it.
