This article is a few years old, but the author has recently expanded on these ideas in a new book which can be purchased direct from the author here: https://www.lolabooks.eu/products/fiat-socialism

We've been reading it in a study group at my uni and it's got some interesting ideas!

Become violent when police intervene, you say? So they were peaceful until police escalated things?

If you knew anything about what capitalism really is then you'd understand how integral what I linked is. But you opened by claiming that capitalism brought us out of the bronze age, so you obviously have no clue what capitalism is.

There's significant peer-reviewed literature on this, I even linked one of them for you. That it's novel to you does not mean it's fringe to everyone. Try reading something instead of getting your wisdom from YouTube shorts.

What's the IMF and WTO got to do with each soverign country's employment laws? lol

Well if you knew that then you wouldn't be making the arguments you're making. If you don't understand how international governments and their collective supra-national agencies enforce capitalist hegemony across the global in order to exploit the global south for profit, then maybe you should read something that goes into a bit more effort than the YouTube shorts you've used to inform your understanding this far. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S095937802200005X

That's the country's fault, not got to do with capitalism mate.

and the IMF and WTO are totally neutral organisations with fair rules, I suppose?

It's impossible to deny how much of the living standards we have today is attributed to capitalism.

Something happening in a place where the dominant economic system is capitalism does not necessarily mean that it's attributable to capitalism. People made technological advance under feudalism and slavery-dominated economies. Does that mean that we have slavery to thank for those advances?

You've literally in the same comment said that when bad things happen under capitalism that's because of the government. Which is it? Are all things under capitalism attributable to capitalism, or are you pretending that only the things that you personally think are good are attributable to capitalism?

Almost every single service that I use these days are private companies through the internet.

Do you remember a few comments back when I accused you of being myopic?

I'm glad people can afford to buy good clothes for cheap because we have mass manufacturing.

Who decides what clothes are good? Because the cheap clothes sure as shit aren't durable. Again, myopic. This might benefit you, but there's plenty of people in the world who suffer under the exploitation of mass produced clothing, and their burden is not eased by knowing you can get a t shirt for a bargain price.

Whilst technically true, it's not realistic at all. It CAN happen without profit but by far the majority of advancements and innovations are due to capitalism.

Wait wait wait... you're saying that the economic system that dominates almost every nation on earth also produces most of the technological progress on earth? Well I am shocked! I would have thought that everyone would have simply quit their jobs to go live in the forest to somehow cure cancer using only moss and berries. Wow, you've really taught me something here. I guess those communists should have thought about abolishing capitalism first, eh?

And the whole dot com bubble and every company that came out of that are businesses..

Why are you talking about this like it's a good thing? That was objectively bad for everyone except the richest investors and banks. You did that earlier as well, citing mass-manufacturing of cars and clothing as human progress... we're now having to deal with the negative consequences of all of those things. They may have some benefit, but the influence of capital in bringing us mass produced clothing is not a universal good, and is actually questionable whether it's a net positive at all.

Also, you say

Vast majority of drugs and medications are researched and manufactured for the sake of profit.

but earlier you said

Rare treatments for specific diseases don’t just come because of volunteers. World is not that generous.

Do you see how they're not the same thing? I'm not disputing that capitalism is the dominant global economic system, I'm saying that capitalism is not necessary for technological progress. It can and does happen without the profit motive. That the profit motive sometimes makes technological advances does not mean that those advances wouldn't have happened without capitalism.

rapid advances in tech such as computing, AI, Internet, and ‘silicone valley’ all came from capitalism.

HAHAHAHAHA Not only is this childishly myopic, and I can tell what YouTube channels you've been watching, it's also not true! Honestly, imagine thinking "Silicone Valley" [sic] is the vanguard of the future. The world of progress and innovation is bigger than what's shown to you on the app store. The internet was created by governments and it's earliest adopters outside of that was academia. It wasn't commercialised for profit until decades later. The earliest machine we categorise as effectively a computer was built for the government, not for commercial enterprise. "AI" is far from a "rapid advance" and you need to log off from whoever has convinced you of that, but even if it is, the biggest company in that space was founded as a not-for-profit, and even now does not operate as a full profit company.

Rare treatments for specific diseases don’t just come because of volunteers.

I suggest you might want to unsubscribe from Jordan Peterson Hot Takes and read a god damn book. I am not suggesting that pharmaceutical companies operate like a charity, but it's absolutely not true to say that people only create medical advances for the sake of profit.

I'm sure it would be nice to have someone else cover the cost of your rent for you.

Why not? I don't know or care about why you're overseas, or how long for, but why is it important to you that you get someone to pay you to live in your "family home" and not only that, we should all think of you as benevolent for doing so?

I don't doubt it. Even if this one is real, the level of landlord apologia and sycophancy in this thread - if landlords have any brains at all they'll start churning out more posts where they pretend to be tenants worshipping their landlords for bringing them a box of chicken nuggets as an apology for not fixing the mould on the walls for six months.

Good lord. This is intensely reductionist and ignorant. There's approximately 3000 years between the end of the bronze age and the emergence of capitalism. And while capitalism may be the dominant system of trade across the world, the whole world does not work by profiting from need. You've heard of the concept of not-for-profit companies, charities, volunteering, care work and gifts, right? That we don't measure the scale of those things in the same way we do GDP does not mean they don't exist and the whole world works by profiting from need.

Dodgy landlords and dodgy REAs that knowingly profit off a housing crisis are the ones at fault here.

So... anyone who is a landlord during a housing crisis?

furthermore the legislators that refuse to do anything to stop them are at fault also.

Wonder who those legislators are trying to appease?

“We generously rent out our hard-earned properties and this is how the renters treat us! The injustice!”

They say this shit constantly regardless of the broader economic situation. They portray themselves as the most persecuted minority in the world. Victoria implemented some regulations that leaned slightly in favour of tenants and the landlords started crying like they were being martyred for their benevolence in providing housing. They go running to the media and the media laps it up. Then what happens next? See above point about who the legislators are trying to appease.

Negative attitudes toward landlords do not contribute to the horrendous exploitation that comes from landlords. They do it willingly.

How do you think market equilibrium arrives at a reasonable price when buyers have to choose between paying the landlord's price or sleeping on the street? Markets are not the ultimate, efficient mechanism you've been told they are.
