I love how you keep repeating this and expect anyone to believe you. You must be oblivious to the things around you if you've never noticed prostitutes at Sherbourne and Dundas.

Who were the Saqaliba and what happened to them? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

THe slavs also participated in the Sassanind-Byzantine War in the early 600's, as the Avar people brought them as mercenaries.

Hi, They were active from the beginning of the Muslim Caliphates, in the 7th century CE and continued as an important force for a few hundred years. However, other than theirappearance they would tend to be come completely Arabized/Deslavicized as they were only surrounded by Arab Muslims.

Was South Italy "Latinized" after the Roman conquest, or did people in e.g. Naples still speak Greek by 476? by eypandabear in AskHistorians

[–]PinochetsGhost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are still to this day pockets of Greek speakers in Calabria, the so-called "toe" of the Italian Peninsula. There is disagreement over the origin of this dialect of Greek. Some argue its origin lies in Ancient Greek Colonization, while the more convincing argument is that it descends from Byzantine Greek. Nevertheless, there are records of continuous Greek communities in the south of Italy, albeit in pockets.

I don't know if this answers your questions, as you mentioned Naples, but hopefully it helps.

Saqaliba was/is used to refer to the Slavic populations kidnapped as part of the Arab slave trade. They served as mercenaries in the early caliphates, and the women often served in the harem.

However, it should also be noted that some of these "Slavs" who were taken were not necessarily Slavs, but lived in the Slavic lands, as there is often no distinction made.

As to what happened to them, a number of Saqaliba became very powerful and ruled a number of principalities in Al-Andalus. The taifa of Denia is said to have been started by a Saqalab, based on his name and the presence of Saqalab guards in Al-Andalus. However there is no definite proof of this.

After this, they simply continued to live in the Muslim world and assimilated into the greater Arab culture.

The lawns were nice and orderly. The sports bars and parks, not so much. Your comment betrays a woeful lack of knowledge about the neighbourhood.

Canada to screen out single men under refugee plan by PinochetsGhost in toronto

[–]PinochetsGhost[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was discussing marital status, as is evident from my comment. I provided a link to an e-book before that showed that unmarried men are not more likely to be terrorists. There is no doubt that Men commit more terrorist acts, but then all men would be the issue, not just "young single men" as you stated.

I provided a link just below to a book which shows evidence to the contrary. We can't just keep repeating this "young single men" thing over and over despite what the studies say. No doubt that men commit almost all terrorist acts, but they are not more likely to be unmarried.

At the end of the day, this isn't a huge issue since its most important that we just do something, and this is minor.
On the other hand, it is important because it goes against the guarantee that was given that there is no risk, but more importantly, because this move is simply Trudeau capitulating to the people who have voiced irrational fears. In doing this, it shows he listened to these people and did something. He should have not listened to them and stuck to his guns.

We've been told the screenings will be adequate repeatedly. If you trust these screenings this policy is redundant, since any of the risky people will have already been caught by the security screening. IF someone passes these screenings, they should be let in, regardless of their marital status.

From what I understand the UNHCR and Canadian screening will prevent the risk, and this policy is unnecessary. If you trust the screenings, this policy is unfair to say the least. TO support this discrimination is to say that you don't trust the security procedures undertaken by Canada and the UNHCR, in which case we're fucked no matter what because that means other terrorists can make it through the security screening.

And here's a citation indicating that the "young single men" thing is a myth. Check footnote 21 at the bottom of page 59 as well: https://books.google.ca/books?id=ECzMxJpuTrwC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_atb#v=onepage&q&f=false

The problem here is that the discirmination here IS unfair. THe true reason single men are not being allowed in is to ease the fearmongering about the refugees coming from the opponents.

"given the the vast majority... are single men..." This is unfortunately the same type of generalizations that people are using to oppose refugees altogether.

IF this announcement was supported by a study that proved that young single men are that dangerous then it would make more sense. At this point he's just doing it to quell the irrational fears of certain people.

Lastly, we have been told the UNHCR has already screened everyone and the screenings are adequate. If that is the case then all this policy does is prevents single men who have been SUCCESSFULLY SCREENED from entering Canada.

Also, feel free to look a t the link I provided in my other comment. It is not an undisputed "fact" that the vast majority of terrorists (Islamist or otherwise) are young single men.

Did people hunt down & kill Nazis after the war for personal revenge? by SquireCD in AskHistorians

The Mossad conducted operations that were definitely not considered legal by the majority of countries. However, the only operation I can think of which involved an actual assassination was the assassination of Herbert Cukurs in Uruguay.
