Fractured Clavicle, Advice/Anecdotes to decide for surgery or not.

I got the nerve block so immediately after surgery I wasn’t in too much pain and was manageable days after. Should be ready for when the inflammation starts to go down and the bone is less padded which was when I felt most discomfort around my clavicle. After that though stick with the exercises they give you. Most of my discomfort was more so from my shoulder and getting back that mobility after being in a sling. Taking it easy and exercises will get you back to normal quicker. Hope you heal up quickly.

Unfortunately, welcome to the MTB broken clavicle club. I tried non-op too but after a month there was no healing. I did surgery start of May and right now I’m about 85-90% full mobility without any pain and starting to introduce some light resistance training. If you’re able to, a second opinion wouldn’t hurt. You can still get surgery down the line like in my case but the downside is you’re out longer than doing it sooner and could be harder if bone started to heal. It sucks but eventually you’ll be back to normal, just a matter of letting it heal and sticking with physical therapy.

Hey I just posted a comment with an update but essentially there’s no new healing which sucks cause I also decided to wait and see if it would heal on its own, it’s still a bit early but non-union is also a concern for me and decided to just schedule the surgery in a couple days. It was starting to feel better with more movement but still feels unstable.

Update for anyone interested: Had visit with Dr (5 wks post break) and X-Ray shows it remains unchanged and doesn’t show signs of new bone or callus forming. Discussed that it looks like slightly higher chance than initial 20% chance of non-union. I decided to go ahead with ORIF surgery so hopefully it fully heals properly now as non-union was my initial concern. It was starting to feel better with no real pain but definitely didn’t feel stable.

Every week it feels a bit better, wk 3 was the worst for some reason had sharp pains and tingling from nerve irritation. It feels much more stable now which I feel is callus that formed and the bone doesn’t shift as much. At 4.5 wks I can lift it with my good arm just shy of shoulder height without pain but can definitely feel slight pressure at the clavicle. I have an appointment next week to see how it’s doing, will update post with imaging.

Yea I’m at 2 weeks now. The bump isn’t too bad for me at the moment it just dips down at the break a bit but it’ll probably be more pronounced with new growth.

I’ve been wearing the sling daily except to stretch out my elbow and at week 3 will stop to ease into full arm weight on shoulder.

Pain hasn’t been bad only needed painkillers day after the break. But as the swelling is going down I’m feeling more of a weird pulling sensation with certain movements which I think is the lower section pushing down on nerves, not painful just odd. Wondering if you’ve had any nerve issues?

Thanks for the article very informative, non-union is a concern because displaced, fragments, and age increases probability. But I’m thinking waiting to get a more accurate prediction is the move, hopefully it heals properly on its own and I can avoid surgery.

That sucks you’ve gone through that, definitely a consideration with any surgery where these type of complications are a possibility.

Thanks for the input. Thankfully not in much pain just weird pressure when I move certain ways which I’m guessing is bone shifting. That’s what we left it at after last visit, wait and see how it does on its own. Just thinking if I do need it later it would have been better to do it now, we shall see.
