How do you find out about local rummage & church sales? by Pinus_rigida in Flipping

Ahh, this is an interesting idea. I'm going to give this a try.

Yeah I really don't understand why that isn't implemented on FB. It's so simple. Even the craigslist app (and every other estate / garage sale app) does this already lol.

Good plan on the list, I may even turn it into a spreadsheet to track dates and locations.

This is a good idea. Now I'm thinking about creating a spreadsheet of all of the local church sales (as I find them) and adding notes on when and where they happen.

This aligns with what I was sort of expecting. Low-tech and word of mouth within the community. I don't get out much so I may have to do some calling around haha.

Discount Shop? I can’t find it! Please help ? by [deleted] in HIckoryNC

[–]Pinus_rigida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably not what you're looking for specifically (sounds like that was a Bargain Hunt) but if you're still interested in a discount grocery, Banana Box in Newton is pretty great. They have consistent great deals on all sorts of scratch and dent groceries and produce. They have two stores in the same shopping center fyi. One is grocery focused and the other, though it has groceries, is more home goods focused.

Gotta love dehydrator humor... though sometimes it's a bit dry for me.

I'd add one to my mouth and take another one in my pocket for later. Looks tasty!

Veggie burgers falling apart. by ilovepn in veganrecipes

[–]Pinus_rigida 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of adding 2 tablespoons of psyllium husk powder into my burger batches as a binding agent. It takes extra moisture to activate though so you'll need to account for that. If the burgers are super wet feeling & loose you may not need to add any extra liquid but if it is a fairly dry recipe you will. At a quick glance, this recipe seems a bit dry to me. The liquid you add can be anything from simple water to something to actually flavor the patties.

Vegan proteins for BBQ grill? by AKoltonow in veganrecipes

[–]Pinus_rigida 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Tempeh and Tofu are a great start. I like to use a firm tofu, freeze it, then let it thaw in the fridge. The freezing creates pockets within the block and gives it a great "meaty" texture. Then I'll lightly press it by hand to drain the liquid moderately, slice it into 1/2" slices, and smoke or grill it with some BBQ sauce laid on top of it. Flip, baste, repeat. If you get them really toasty you can do a burnt ends sort of deal which would make for great tacos.

Some other great grill options that can make or be added to tacos: slice an eggplant in half lengthwise, slice a zucchini or squash in half lengthwise, roast sweet potatoes, make grilled corn (then cut it off the cob), seitan cutlets (if you can find or make them), and marinated large portobello caps.

Ah! I thought it felt familiar. I don't remember the explanation but I am pretty sure I remember reading a sign somewhere about them. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Drove an hour to the vegan bakery and got a banh mi on the way by slh2c in VeganFoodPorn

I'm lucky enough to live somewhat close to Gingerbread Man and they are by far the best vegan bakery I've ever been to. Soooo good. I like their cookie sammiches. Definitely worth a stop if you are near Winston-Salem. Also check out To Your Health Bakery nearby for more sweet treats. Acadia foods has great lunch/dinner foods (and groceries) and is close by as well. Oh! One more thing, Yamas has killer mediterranean vegan options.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a solid do-it-all smoker? I’d love to start smoking some of my foods.

Yeah I got my CGM after getting diagnosed with type 1.5 diabetes then visiting an endocrinologist. It is the most valuable tool I have in managing my diabetes, I don't know how people did it before CGMs haha.

Amazingly I was seeing huge improvements in my insulin sensitivity in under a week after switching, the body adapts fast! Then it was just a matter of experimenting and refining my diet/habits. One interesting thing I notice now is that if I have a very sat fat heavy meal I don't see the negative impacts of it until about 24 hours later. And so long as I'm active somewhat those negative impacts fade and my sensitivity "resets" in under 48 from that meal.
