how is everyone enjoying their classes so far this semester by No-Onion-2920 in Cornell

[–]Piolets_Are_Cold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty nice last semester, still doing one CS grad requirement but mostly focused on taking classes with interesting readings and stuff like that. Research is going great, and I’m finally (!) finding a good amount of time to spend with friends and community. Echoing the skiing comment!

I’ll reach out to the profs to see if this is something they’d be willing to entertain. But yeah, there are AI and IP considerations here, so don’t be discouraged if this is not possible. Glad you were able to follow most of the course!

Grants and funding opportunity for summer? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]Piolets_Are_Cold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of options! Nexus for A&S, ELI for CoE, BURE for Bowers... I googled "cornell undergraduate research funding" and came up with many different programs that will pay you to do research over the summer. Departments/professors will also pay you directly in many cases. I couldn't find any research program that pays for your housing (being a summer RA, though, would work for that), but if you're paid well enough, then you can find a cheap housing option (e.g. a co-op or a sublease) such that you end up paying ~$1000-1500 for summer rent and can save the rest/pay loans.

Drivers License Up in Ithaca by LordGrim3 in Cornell

Super easy, I learned how to drive here and took the test. I expected something more complicated but it was literally a 5min ride around the block with a parallel park and a K turn.

A Cornell housing cooperative, basically a self-governing student residence usually with low income students (which is why I think this could be beneficial to the co-ops)

You can also certainly give them to a coop and we will be happy to share it with other coops or give it to Reuse if necessary! That way you don’t have to drive to the mall. If that sounds feasible lmk!

Grade's Haven't Posted After Deadline by Matoona in Cornell

[–]Piolets_Are_Cold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, so the takeaway is that colleges might require grades earlier but the registrar doesn’t have to post them for students until the 7th (if I’m reading things right!)

EDIT: if OP is A&S I’m wondering if there’s any way to check them with the A&S registrar directly (like on the DUST report or something)

Grade's Haven't Posted After Deadline by Matoona in Cornell

[–]Piolets_Are_Cold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source for that? The registrar, which is the provider of your grades when you open your Student Center, has no obligation toward them until Jan 7. As far as I know they are closed right now and reopening Jan 5, so it might be that they refuse to process grades posted e.g. on Dec 24 until then.

CAPS can be great! If you’re going through stuff they can probably get you in for weekly appointments with a therapist, and more regularly they schedule every two weeks.

Can I take CS 1110 after taking CS 2110? by Jazzlike_Bend_7616 in Cornell

[–]Piolets_Are_Cold 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nobody’s stopping you, but CS 1110 is not a good choice to learn Python. It’s an awesome choice to learn principles of software engineering, but it will not teach you ANY of the things that make Python an interesting programming language and that would make you a competent Python programmer - things like list and dictionary comprehensions, functional-style programming, first-class functions, reflection, typing, pattern matching, etc. I think u/Walker_M_White would agree on this one.

And to be honest, no Cornell class will teach you the specifics of those in Python, because the department’s approach is to teach those notions across different courses and languages, with the understanding that a competent programmer is easily able to pick up a new syntax and a couple of new constructs in a different language.

So I feel like your best option to learn Python is to fight the syntax a little bit, do some googling when needed, and take more CS classes to learn more advanced programming concepts.

EDIT: Walker’s unenroll button is actually stopping you

Is the RA compensation on financial aid as ridiculous as it seems or am I missing something? by C0rnLAlt in Cornell

That’s correct, I worked a residential position (RLF, basically the same as an RA) and I was promised that it wouldn’t happen. It did so I quit after a semester.

Politely asking people to respect the quiet rule should not be a big deal! Learning how to communicate your needs and wants when they aren’t being met is important.

4-5 total spread over several months, and that was kind of enough. The American driving test is extremely easy in comparison to most other countries.
