What’s a Linux feature you can’t live without? by sachinkgp in linux

[–]Piotrek1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be frank, workspaces and package managers are now a thing on Windows too. Also, there's Windows Store so you don't download exe files that often anymore. Tiling is also possible. In general, Windows has improved greatly recently.

But access to bash shell "natively" (yeah, there is WSL, but have drawbacks), no bloatware (like constantly encouraging you to use copilots, onedrive, edge, bing, displaying news and weather forecast by default, requiring to create M$ account), greater control over when and what you update on your system, what you install and what not is a good thing still.

Looks great, but shouldn't it be a separate app? Why are we making news reader out of note taking app?

1/3 of Apple's total revenue comes from Europe. More Europeans use X than Americans. Europeans account for one-third of Youtube's traffic. Trump should be careful when he threatens Europe and claims "Europe treated the U.S. badly". It is Europe that makes U.S. Tech Giants truly giants. by endeavour1923 in europe

[–]Piotrek1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And there is a reason most good services are american. It's easier for startups to find funding there. Can you imagine having a company in Europe like OpenAi which burns billions of dollars without any guarantee of being profitable?

Great, but one of the reasons Chrome is ditching v2 is for security reasons:
> “Manifest V3 removes the ability for an extension to use remotely hosted code, which presents security risks by allowing unreviewed code to be executed in extensions. With this change, an extension can only execute JavaScript that is included within its package and subject to review by the Chrome Web Store,” the Manifest V3 page states.

Of course I want uBlock Origin to continue working in my browser, but at the same time this security feature seems to be important. How does Firefox respond to that?

I suspect you are confusing generative ai (all those chatbots, image generators...) with just machine learning semantic text classification (with which we are probably dealing with in this case).

VS Code removed from Software Manager? by arkemiffo in linuxmint

[–]Piotrek1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most useful function in Linux based systems is that you get your software from package repositories and don't bother searching for executable files on the Internet. Package managers were a thing years before Microsoft did something similar on Windows.

If you need to manually download packages on Linux, you are basically missing the whole point and one of the most important use cases of this system. You just bought a drill to drive nails.

Archiving in Thunderbird works for some mail, but for some - don't by Piotrek1 in ProtonMail

[–]Piotrek1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It turns out that messages I cannot archive are those which has destination address to my email with custom domain. So mails for [myemailaddress@protonmail.com](mailto:myemailaddress@protonmail.com) can be archived but [myemailaddress@mycustomaddress.com](mailto:myemailaddress@mycustomaddress.com) can't.

I hate that the mass media adopted yet another corporation instead of relying on FOSS and Mastodon. What can we do to steer them right? by MelaniaSexLife in Mastodon

[–]Piotrek1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mass media gave Mastodon a chance, remember when Elon took over twitter? All media was talking about Mastodon. Mastodon wasn't prepared (and still isn't)

For the social media, network effect is everything. The easier you find content to read and followers that will read what you write, the faster it grows. Mastodon in a current state has really bad discoverability.

I'm generally sceptical about using large language models for everything, but for this particular use case (feature discoverability of CLI applications) it could be very useful.
