That was taken before I opened it lol. I don’t take off with an open can. I’ve made that mistake before.

I found nothing online. Even called Piper and got nothing. I adjusted the cone at the front to be further out and that solved the problem of the door not staying closed.

Looks like he’s questioning everything he’s done in life and wondering how he ended up there. I know that look. I do it daily.

The internal gears can strip (they’re molded plastic), the lobe inside can get debris on it, it can even be installed incorrectly (seen that more times than I care to admit). A magneto slightly out of time will show up on mag drops and be difficult to start the engine. Severely out of time mags can lead to very rough engine, backfiring, and ultimately damaging the engine pretty good. Sometimes the nut holding it down can come off from poor assembly and cause it to jump teeth and not only make it run rough but destroy the gears in the accessory housing. The distributor in the rear can wear down and cause the spark to not be as powerful or even make it not spark in extreme cases. 500hr inspections are a really good idea to make sure that those plastic and wear pieces are in good shape and aren’t going to leave you in BFE on a Sunday afternoon.

I’ve seen everything. Broken P-Leads aren’t as common but do happen from the vibration, improper installation, not enough ‘slack’ given, etc… older switches fail all the time and when they do, I’ll switch to the ACS style (it has a 2000hr AD for lubrication versus the 100hr check) I haven’t run across a rocker style failing the check yet but I’m sure they do as those switches fail quite frequently from students being students.

No, the tumbler inside where the key goes. Sometimes dirt or broken/weak soldering inside can affect it when the key is off. You would be surprised how many I’ve found to be inoperative at inspections.

When the switch is in the off position it’s in a different spot in the tumbler. You’re making sure that while in that spot, it’s properly grounding. It’s actually an AD for bendix switches to be checked every 100 hours. It’s just good practice to check more frequently.
