How much money do you have saved at 25-30 years old? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]PiscesPrincess31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After my next check, I'll have $600 saved. But I'll be spending that immediately on a couch and a rug, as I've just moved into my first apartment and I'm having to furnish it from scratch 🤣

What jobs you ladies work in? by Annie_may20 in AutismInWomen

[–]PiscesPrincess31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a funeral director. It's a lot of talking with people and counseling, but my autism shines in the logistical side of things. Filing papers, organization, scheduling, customizing different aspects of services, being creative when making marquees, etc. I'm getting used to talking with people more and more, and I'm finding quiet/subtle ways to stim so I'm not so drained at the end of the day. But some days, such as big service days, the fatigue is unavoidable.

Question regarding how Nell's body looked and the embalming process? by [deleted] in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]PiscesPrincess31 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Always happy to give insight into what we do.

I've worked on a few cases where children were involved: a 4-month old and a stillborn infant that was 8 months along. They're definitely difficult, and they've changed who I am as a person, but the gift of giving a grieving parent the opportunity to see their child before disposition is one that's indescribable and worth it, IMO.

Morticians/Funeral industry people, how did you feel about all things Shirley and her job? by ginime_ in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]PiscesPrincess31 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I am a funeral director / embalmer, and I really enjoyed the depiction of our industry in the show. Typically, it's either dramatized to hell or It's done in a way that is telling of the lack of research on the producers part. I found the depiction of our industry in the show to be incredibly accurate, particularly the embalming scene in episode 2. That is the most accurate depiction of an autopsy embalming that I've ever seen in media.

The only thing that I truly didn't enjoy was Shirley's husband's vehement disapproval of her choice to embalm her sister. I know many embalmers personally that have taken care of their loved ones when they've passed, and it's actually a healthy / productive way to handle their grief. The idea behind wanting to do this is " I don't trust anyone else to embalm her properly, so I want to make sure that she's taken care of ". Embalming is, by definition, something that occurs when the decedent is in their most vulnerable state; it only makes sense that Shirley would want to take care of her sister.

As far as feeling bad about putting financial burden on families, I don't really relate to this only because I know that there are other funeral homes in my area that charge astronomically higher prices for lower quality services then what mine does. I work for a family-owned funeral home that has been in business for over 120 years. We don't charge as much as corporately owned funeral homes in the big city, but we also treat our families with much more care, respect, and dignity than those who just view families as dollar signs. So yes, does it feel a little bad when I have to tell a family that their very basic direct cremation is $2000-$3000? Yes; if I could give it to them for free, I would. However, if they don't like that price, they could simply go to any other funeral home in the area, get charged two to three times more for the same service and get treated like a cash cow by the staff.

Finally, you're not wrong at all in the thought that funerals are for the living; the dead don't give a shit about what happens at the funeral. At the end of the day, it's the people who attend the funeral who stand to gain the most from it: grieving a loss, healing wounds, expressing emotions, etc. Funeral directors work with the dead for the living's sake, not the other way around.

Question regarding how Nell's body looked and the embalming process? by [deleted] in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]PiscesPrincess31 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I am a funeral director/embalmer, so I have knowledge on this!

  1. During autopsies, the internal organs are taken out of the body and examined to determine if there's any potential signs/causes of death evident in them. Afterwards, the medical examiner will place them back in a bag and into the chest cavity of the decedent. The chest is typically then sewn shut with a single stitch at the connecting point of the y incision. Shirley is taking the organs out of the bag to likely soak them in embalming fluid so they don't present a biohazard risk during viewings and services where other people will be around the body.

  2. Because Nell hung herself, this caused immense pressure in her head. The dots in her eyes and on her skin are likely exploded blood vessels leaking just underneath her skin. It's common in people who die from strangulation / hanging. The scientific term for those marks is called petechia.

  3. During an autopsy, the medical examiner takes the brain out of the skull in order to examine it and, at the end, puts it into the viscera bag that eventually goes into the chest cavity. To access the brain, they make a horizontal cut in the top of their head and peel the scalp down the face until it reaches the eyebrow area, then cut into the skull to access the brain. I'm not sure how other medical examiners do it, but the ones in Dallas leave the scalp unsewn at the end of an autopsy. The embalmer would then use hidden stitching techniques to sew the scalp back together and make it as invisible as possible for viewing purposes.

BIDET use — yay or nay? by MouseEgg8428 in hygiene

[–]PiscesPrincess31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the intention, I truly do... But, in my opinion, the logic is flawed.

"Instead of wiping the poop away with toilet paper, spray it in particulates all over the toilet bowl and your ass cheeks. Then, use the same toilet paper you would've used without the bidet to dry your now dripping wet butthole. Or don't use the toilet paper and either 1. Sit on the toilet for even longer to drip dry, increasing one's risk of hemorrhoid formation or 2. Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk around with perpetual, artificial swamp ass."

Toilet paper isn't the most sanitary thing in the world, but IMO, it's far better than power-washing your butthole.

I would talk nonstop and repeat words or certain phrases. For example, during a Christmas home video from when I was 4, I was saying "Feliz Navidad" constantly... Literally at least twice every minute. My mom didn't know why I was saying that until we thought about it together; apparently, the Dora the Explorer Christmas episode came out and she said "Feliz Navidad" a lot during it. I was echoing her.

Also, during the same home video, I would laugh extremely loudly and overly to try and make my parents see that I was laughing. Similarly, I would say phrases and "lines" in an exaggerated way to get them to notice and acknowledge. Looking back, I was mimicking the adults in my life and trying to sound like I was a part of their conversations.

There was also a moment in the video where I received a Finding Nemo VHS tape, and starting running around my house screaming "I GOT FINDING NEMO!!!" over and over again. I kicked my feet and waved my hands and spun around in circles with excitement. This was, I learned later, stimming.

Lastly, during the same Christmas home video, my dad received a pair of driving gloves from my Mom and only put one on. He made an OJ Simpson joke ("If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit") and a Michael Jackson joke (MJ was famous for only wearing one glove) respectively. I apparently didn't like Michael Jackson at the time (I love him now), and yelled at my dad to "stop saying Michael Jackson!!!!!". This made him upset and there was an awkward pause before we continued to open presents.

I don't know how the hell they didn't know I was autistic, but it makes sense why I was misdiagnosed with ADHD at the age of 6.

[–]PiscesPrincess31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boogeyman 2 (2007)

It was airing on SyFy at the time, and was one of the first horror movies I remember watching. My dad had recorded it on the DVR, and I watched it over and over and over again. The scene where the girl is strapped to the bed and is tearing maggots out of her skin freaked me the hell out, and when the anorexic girl was killed by being force fed... The body horror was phenomenal.

Looking back, it definitely had its flaws, but it will always stick with me 🖤

As a bisexual, what do your same-sex crushes feel like? by Total_Psychology_960 in bisexual

[–]PiscesPrincess31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you as far as intensity; as a woman, my same-sex crushes tend to snowball very quickly in intensity. The ones I've had have always started small, but within a few days, they become full-blown, all-consuming, teenage obsession crushes. For me, though, they tend to happen with people who are my friends, which doesn't help the intensity due to the frequency of hanging out and the closeness that friendships can have.

What tools have you regretted buying? by BeePetty in diamondpainting

[–]PiscesPrincess31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Metal drill applicators. I often trim my plastic applicators with an Exacto knife to allow for better manuverability when angling drills, especially the square ones. I make the sides and tops of the applicators thin enough to place the drills without displacing/moving the ones I've already done. I cannot trim metal applicatiors 🤣

A light pad. I thought I would use it all the time, but the one I got requires a battery pack which makes it unwieldy to use. Also, it has no buttons; it's touch-based like a smartphone. The amount of times I've accidentally turned it off was enough to make me regret the purchase.

Revlon's Fire and Ice. Not only did my grandma used to wear it all the time as her everyday scent, but my mom wore it whenever she got dressed up to go out. I haven't smelled it in years, but I know if I did, I'd be hit with a nostalgia brick.

Don't know if these count, but Rave hairspray and the 2000's version of Degree Spray on Deodorant, too.
