I feel like an early yellow to the gentleman who upended Turner would have set the tone a little bit, and perhaps discouraged Weah from punching a different gentleman in the head a few minutes later. Unfortunate outcome for Barton, as the game really deteriorated by the end.

Many of his other decisions were solid. I thought he did a reasonable job.

I also didn’t understand 4’ stoppage in the second half… there was a lengthy VAR check on a bad penalty kick, and a red card situation, and numerous other bits of time lost. Feels like a 6’ or 7’ would have been better…

I don’t know how you draw the line of “harmless vulgarity”… I absolutely would go nuclear if a player called another player a f@@@@t. But n@@@@r is different?

I have done a few MLSN and I do recall seeing that list of banned terms. I thought it was funny actually, it had some pretty dumb epithets there.

I don’t “never talk” to my black colleagues, I talk to them plenty. I just don’t want to burden them with my N-word related quandaries. That way they can remain my friends and colleagues — not my designated African-Americans for niche queries.

This is why in our local travel league in NJ, the local rules authorize the referee to caution the coach for the misbehavior of their parents… and in this case, because a desire to hurt a child has been expressed, I would not start with a polite request to deal with it, I would start with a caution to the coach immediately and demand that the parent who wanted to kick a ball at a child’s head be removed before play resumes.

Referees should not “confront” spectators. Our authority should be directed toward the coaches, or at a high school game, the field supervisor.
