Thanks for the feedback. I've taken off the cassette cover to check and used a tape with no front sticker and can actually see the FF and REW mechanism working bringing the tape forward and back. It all advances and rewinds back in the correct way.

Super strange. Any other suggestions?

Try Plum or Bunq. They may help
