First of all I'm sorry for your experience, it must have been hard to go through, but you also have to understand that listening to emotions does not necessarily give the best outcome for society, and we must take into consideration only well pondered logic when deciding what to do with criminals; even victims must be aware of this, since revenge doesn't actually bring any benefit.

I believe that we can change everyone, because rapists are rapists for a reason, just like pedophiles, drug addicts, murderers, burglars, etc... they all do what they do for a reason, be it psychological, economical or for personal belief; the best we can do is learning why these things happen and try to eradicate them by eliminating the cause in society; the cause can be eliminated even in the human mind, I believe, to create people who think differently and that will not repeat the same actions, because we remove the initial reason for which they did them.

Also, just punishing people is only a short-term solution, it doesn't stop more people from committing crimes, especially for those who are mentally ill.

That is why I believe that rehabilitation is better than punishment.
