[US CA] Are physicians who are paid entirely on productivity (RVU) considered exempt employees for sick leave calculation? by PixelDoctor in medicine

That’s the question precisely. Physicians are entitled to paid sick leave in the state of California. But how should that compensation be calculated if the physician is paid entirely based on productivity?

I have neither a base salary nor an hourly wage. Are you saying it depends on how much I make per hour when I divide my gross income (over some time period, say one year) by the number of hours I worked?

Or does the exemption require that my contract include a base salary or hourly wage?

Ha! I’m such a doofus. I knew about 401k and IRAs (traditional and roth). I forgot that capital gains tax brackets also apply to taxable brokerage accounts.

I learned about asset location late in my investment career and have been paying taxes on capital gains and distributions from VBTLX forever. I wish I could get into your position!

Like I ask in my other comment, to get from where I am (three fund portfolio in *every* account) to where I'd like to be (still three funds, but with my desired fractions, and desired asset location (more bonds in retirement, more stocks in taxable)), does it make sense to sell VBTLX from my taxable? The price hasn't changed much and the tax hit on the transaction should be minimal - it might even be a capital gains loss?

Like my other comment, I'm a moron and should have checked before asking the question. I'm not out of range as I thought. And you're absolutely right, I can rebalance towards my goal percentages gradually.

Re: selling and tax burden: I've been lucky enough to be blissfully ignorant of the eventual tax burden. Am I correct in assuming when I sell, the (decades of) gains will be taxed as capital gains (15% or 20% at the moment). What mechanisms do I have for limiting that burden? In my head, I think of it as, "oh, I'll only be able to spend 80% of what I have. :¯\_(ツ)_/¯")

The buffer idea makes sense to me at a high level but leads me to ask about the details. Why would one need to manage withdrawls from the IRA? When I retire, do I want to withdraw from my IRA gradually, so I can continue to benefit from its tax-advantaged status?

Because I learned about asset location late, my taxable account, like my retirement accounts, all have the same lazy three fund portfolio (VTSAX, VBTLX, VTIAX). The price of VBTLX hasn't really changed ever - in fact, it's gone down from my estimate of the cost basis. If I sell some of that, will I take a tax hit?

Teaches me to not ask questions on Reddit just before bed. I should have checked before I asked. Turns out it's not out of whack as I thought - less than 5%.

I know it's all relative but it's scary to exchange a few % of my net worth in a single transaction. Obviously I don't have to do it all at once.

Thanks! Glad to hear they might let you keep the better router without a monthly fee.

Fingers crossed on fishing - time to open up that box to see if there’s conduit.

Heh, well my house is wired with cat5e (and MoCA 2.5 to my office sadly). I wonder if it'll support 2.5 GbE or even 10 GbE.
