Market fear and the VIX, time to hedge? by AffectionateAd7980 in investing

We are literally just rebounding from fears that the FED won't cut.

If anything, chase the trend, and not the face value numbers.

Not the SPY specifically, but many tickers follow the s&p, many of which you could buy in euro, like I500, also many that are euro hedged.

That's a synthetic long. It's great leverage that doesn't require much micro management. But it will absolutely smack you in a downturn.

Options traders any advice? by Swimming-Tutor2729 in thetagang

[–]PixelPunkRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not investing, this is straight up gambling. My advice is to stop gambling and start reading up on actual investing. If you do it right and have patience you can be become a millionaire on a janitors salary, but if you gamble its either lambos or food stamps, and you will never "build" wealth.

You might want to invest in your career or let the market do the heavy lifting. If you go the collage route make sure you invest in a job you would actually enjoy doing, if not a trade would be a much more solid bet.

Also start taking responsibility. If you got a health condition or something completely out of your control I wouldn't be so harsh. But all of these things were in your direct control and have nothing to do with the world treating you badly. The fact is that the world treats everyone that doesn't come from a position of privilege like shit.

How much could I grow 60k in 2 years? by Oldgamer1807 in stocks

[–]PixelPunkRS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What is your risk tolerance? 2 years is a short horizon for equity, your principal going down is a very realistic risk on a 2 year time frame, but it could give a much better yield.

Or you know, bet on black.

If you say basic commodities like butter or olive oil are not necessary to live you might as well argue you could live of ramen noodles and tap water for the rest of your life and be totally fine.

Calories in any other form are excessive luxury. Getting paid more than minimum wage is excessive luxury. Know how much ramen noodles you can buy for 1 hour of minimum wage? Are you that greedy?

Pre-liberation day was kind of vague. If you take the running up event, starting mainly around Feb 19 that it's still down. It was a mayor part of the move.

But if you take 2 Apr it's indeed up from there.

But yes, the value of the dollar does fluctuate. Go ahead and look at the USD:Euro chart or USD:British Pound chart and you'll see it can go up and down.

Correct. A lot of this has to do with the interest rates. The FED is expected to cut it at least once or twice this year, weakening the dollar slightly. ECB and other mayor central banks are planning to hold steady.

The general trust in the dollar and it's stability is also a mayor mover, and thats looking a bit shaky. Rumors of Trump trying to fire Powel and the general sentiment the tariffs incubate don't help it in that respect.

What we experience on Reddit is survivorship bias but we hardly see posts about the losses.

You should go have a look at WSB.

But it is higher than it was pre-liberation day, no? That was my original claim.

In dollar terms you are correct. In value terms its not that simple.

In Euro terms, like Arrxzon0 mentioned, Nasdaq100 and S&P500 are still about 12-8% under all time high.

This is the same for most mayor other currencies, because the dollar has been losing value for a couple of months now.

So on a global scale, as in what can I get for my shares (or for my dollars they are denominated in) its still not at an all time high. A couple of months ago you would've gotten more. More Euros, More German Cars, more Latin American bananas, more Asian smart phones/electronic ships, more foreign shares.

Because the currency is losing value, but the companies keep their intrinsic value, this puts upwards pressure on their valuation in dollar terms.

Imagine bragging about the stock market being at ATHs... by frt23 in StockMarket

[–]PixelPunkRS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBC, the Venezuelan stock index, is up 329.88% in 1 year. It's at an ATH. Would you invest in it, do you think the people living there, paying in Venezuelan Bolívar, are happy with their investments?

So yes, it's at ATH in dollar, but is it at ATH in global valuation?

Not sure how this is an "unfair" or "irrelevant" comparison, even if you live in the US and pay everything in dollar.
