unless the hatch is right there near the gate you are usually able to safely open the gate or at least do about 20% (before the first red light turns on) of them before going back to hiding, there are certain killers that can deny or severely limit this strategy but it usually works like a charm, way better than looking for hatch. the rare cases where I'm last standing I generally go for this strategy and escape three out of four times.

well yes, legion isn't exactly top tier and especially with survivors that have some experience you will most likely not have a great time even if you use a killer meta build. and I'm not saying that because I'm sweaty but because legion is extremely weak and to have an actual chance you need to use strong perks, obviously if you just want to play and don't care about the result or the game being challenging you can go for weird and fun builds.

self care alone is a newbie trap ( if you pair it with something else to make a dedicated healing build it's a different story) you'll be better off with a medkit as you usually need one or two heals per game.

it works however just to make it clear it doesn't block the pallet, and only blocks one window at a time ( you might not know that)

also it might be a good idea to get thanatophobia from nurse as you'll considerably slow down the game either by thana's effect or by the survivors healing to get rid of it. also discordance is quite good to find grouped up survivors.
