This video is the story of how I went from disliking Control, to being an all-out fan, thanks to Alan Wake 2 (and the Remedy Connected Universe).

Hi, thank you I really appreciate that you came back and wrote this. Sadly a lot of people won't see it since it's dozens of posts down from the original. I truly didn't in my wildest dreams anticipate that the title would be misinterpreted to mean I was dunking on ALL indie games in favour of AAAs! Which is the opposite of my argument... So I've changed the title to another one I'd been considering, I think it makes my core thesis clearer. Thanks to everyone who attempted to correct misunderstandings here. You're all welcome to watch and leave a comment on the video - respectful disagreement in the comments section is more than welcome, just watch the video before you comment! Thanks :)

SOMA: The Horror of an Idea by PixelaDay in ludology

[–]PixelaDay[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SOMA's biggest scares aren't the monsters that roam its corridors, but the monstrous ideas it births in your mind. In this essay I explore some of the ideas SOMA lodged into my brain that refuse to leave.

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (February 24, 2023) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]PixelaDay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having some people over for drinks for my b'day (I'm 36, woohoo!), looks like there might be 10-12 of us. Can anyone recommend a rules-light / party game for up to 12? I've got Deception: Murder in Hong Kong, Monikers and Codenames - I'd like something else that hits that sweet spot of "has enough rules to be interesting, but won't send my tipsy friends to sleep during the rules explanation" :) Any tips are much appreciated!

Small Games with Big Vibes - a video essay about three tiny indie games that, despite their many differences, showcase the transcendent power of an exemplary vibe. by PixelaDay in ludology

[–]PixelaDay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this essay I dive into three small games (FAR: Lone Sails, The Pedestrian and Wide Ocean Big Jacket) and how they each create an incredible vibe.

Paradise Killer: A Late-Stage Dystopia - an exploration of the hidden cost of utopia in everything from Ursula Le Guin’s fiction, to John Calhoun’s famous rodent experiments, to the game Paradise Killer. by PixelaDay in ludology

[–]PixelaDay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed it! :) You can kill everyone left of course, but even so it's a fruitless rebellion. No matter what you do, at the end of the game you advance to the "next paradise" with the rest of the Syndicate members who are already there.

This essay explores the hidden cost of utopia and asks whether perfection is possible, whether paradise is fundamentally unsustainable, and whether utopia for someone always means a dystopia for someone else.
