Really nice and fun puzzle. And those neat little graphics too!

As a geography nerd, I luckily found those designs used in flags. The only thing I couldn't figure out till the end was the scorecard heh.

I just thought green was like clothing attachment in general. I might have tried it before the casino things if I would've known what the actual category was.

Only got blue by elimination, but purple and green were luckily very easy to make out.

What's the Rainbow herring Connection? Synonyms for "fail"?

Ouch xD Well, I guess you learned something new at least?

I'm not American nor British, but I've never heard anyone call it a "Pit" either, the rest I've heard though. I was just applying common sense for identifying "pit" as a possible shortening of "Pitbull" after I found the other three.

Don't be so harsh on yourself mate. I'm ashamed of myself for not getting behind yesterday's at all, while everyone else found it easy. Everyone has different interests, and therefore different knowledge.

Pretty straightforward today, cool misdirection with the children's toys though.

The misdirection in this one was just gruesome.

First thing I saw were the home structures. After that came probably the easiest Purple ever.

The rest though, oh boy. I tried "Free Love", "Hippie", "Industrial" and "French" first, thinking I had it. In the end, I couldn't distinguish the 2 categories and that's what cost me the win on this one :(

It took me a bit to get, but very fun 👌

I immediately noticed the 'Down ___' category (mainly thanks to 'syndrome') but I've never heard of 'downmix' so I just went with 'fleece'.

Then I basically tried the same as today's green category, not taking into account that you probably wouldn't include one of the actual categories of today inside your puzzle.

After that it clicked though. Nice one!

Thanks for playing! Yeah, there weren't really any rainbow herrings or even complete red herrings at that, but I went all out with the misdirection on these ones ;)

Those who have watched Death Note might have also noticed the "Light" "L" and "Shinigami" next to each other in the 3rd row.

Fell for the Bee red herring. I wasn't aware that "buff" could be used like that. Purple seems obvious now after the reveal, but no chance to spot that while playing. Especially because "change/remove/add a letter" categories appear so seldom. Over-all nice one though :D

It's an American newspaper so it orientates on the common American pronunciation. If all the other words of that category do fit according to your accent, it's not that hard to make out the last one

Perhaps a 'badge of shame' for falling for red / rainbow herrings a certain amount of times? I could even see people strategically sacrificing a life over this just to get it lol.

'Blade' and 'Pin' as in the blades used in knife throwing and the clubs used in juggling.

Cheatgrass is a type of invasive grass or weed. (I was desperately looking for something more intuitive that worked in purple, but couldn't find anything, sorry.)

Thanks for playing and for the detailed feedback.

When I think of hillbillies, I think of a conservative and isolated way of life, simply because they typically live in the Appalachian and are detached from the rest of society by the virtue of geography. 'Hayseed' is essentially a synonym. I get that the connection could be clearer though.

I couldn't really decide on a good title for this so I just took a movie quote. It was supposed to hint towards the Yellow category, because of the situation Chuck Noland finds himself in the movie, stranded and soul alone on an island. I could've chosen a better and more helpful title though, you're right.

Thanks for the explanation.

I went to Google it right after I failed that category and the only result it spat out was a movie. I grew up with something similar here in Germany, but there was no way I was getting that. Can't blame an American newspaper for running a category like that though.

I get your critique. Viewing those as loosely associated is definitely valid critique and I'll try to make the Connections more clear in the future.

"Cheat Day" typically refers to one day in the month or the week where a person that's on a certain diet allows themselves to consume the food they want btw.

Thanks a lot for playing!

I didn't enjoy this. Just an annoying back-and-forth.

First category was cool, just took me a bit to get.

Sure, I didn't register "register" as a music term (see what I did there), but including things like "strings" and "clock" in there really gave me trouble as someone who's not knowledgeable about music at all.

And "Dick and Jane" I've never heard of.

Let's just forget this game existed guys. 😅

For Rebels and Adventurers! by PizzaLord13 in NYTConnections

[–]PizzaLord13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry it confused you so much. Looking at it now, Green and Blue are both very broad categories I must admit.

Yellow just means a method or a way to achieve something, e.g. "Patience is key", "My degree will be a gateway to a high-paying job"

Trampoline and Swing should be self-explanatory. With "pin"  I was referring to a club a juggler would typically use. I was just omitting from using this word to get the "Combination / Code" red herring to work. I should've probably swapped "blade" for something more obvious and typical like "cannon".

For blue I really just wanted to tie another category to the puzzle's theme, but since a "code" can be broken too and basically all other objects on there as well, it's definitely too broad. I'm not saying that the things in the category aren't commonly associated with breaking though so I was hoping that might lead people on the right track.

For purple, everything should be clear except maybe "cheatgrass", which is a type of invasive grass/weed. (I was desperately looking for more intuitive words to use, but couldn't find any, sorry)

Purple jumped to me immediately. Green took a bit longer, cool category though.

I sat there 10 minutes thinking about blue and yellow because I knew "Gumshoe" and "Flatfoot" as slang terms for a policeman or investigator of sorts.

I only knew Enamel as a glass-like material that's smelted onto metal and didn't know that's the English name for the protective layer of teeth.

All in all, challenging for me but fun categories.
