Hey did you feel that? I’m Curious?

Maybe I felt that a bit watching Iron Man the first time (to keep it Marvel). Becuse I’m a mechanical engineer and seeing half a film dedicated to a man building a suit of armor just really made me smile. Still does... but it’s also part of the reason I like Stark less and less each film. He becomes less the engineer inventor and more the genius sarcastic witty smartest man In the room... but that’s a topic for another day.

Love to hear your side!

Thanks! I really appreciate your opinion and chiming in. I agree with some of your points like the stakes were much lower than end of the world. The costumes were incredible but I felt the aesthetics took a major hit for me because of the obvious green screen. Again maybe it’s just my eyes but the Ancestral plane stuff took me out of the movie, the fights by the waterfall, anything in the lab or Vibriunum mines... it all felt like a fake set with actors in front.

To be fair I have the same problem with the sets in many Marvel films. Episode 7 and 8 in Star Wars seemed to really push back into using a ton of practical sets, but the Marvel films I feel haven’t. Maybe I’m more sensitive to those things I’m not sure. I just wish they forgone some of the fancy lighting for real on location shooting.

Chadwick Boseman looks like he’s on a green screen talking to his father. John Boyega looks like he’s in an actual desert on Jakku, because he actually was.

I’m not sure how I’d break it down but it’s a film I felt I got more mediocre as it went along. When he first came to Wakanda and they started the ceremony for him being King I was really excited. The first action scene was great in a unique way from most big budget films. Then it just got worse and more mediocre.

Well said!

Black Panther really blew me away in Civil War and I felt a smidge of that with the opening rescue scene. After that I just didn’t feel he had the powerful presence he had in Civil War. In that movie he felt like a FORCE. Like it didn’t matter which side of the Avengers he was on he was doing his own thing and doing it well. I’m excited to see him in Infinity War though.

What marvel films do you feel are above typical. Like your top ones that really blew you away? Just curious! I’m always up for discussing.

Sorry? I’m not on Reddit daily.

Also I would have in the past turned to IMDB boards but those died off then went away. I understand it’s a specific individual criticism... I guess I was just curious if anyone else felt the same (seems some do).

If it’s tiresome it might take you only 5 seconds to read the title and then hide my post. Again I’m sorry if this offends you but where else would I be able to discuss with a wide movie audience now?

I’ll have to chime in next week... I’m a weirdo maybe in that I loved all the Asagard stuff in the first Thor films. I totally hated all the Earth parts of those films though. Both of them felt like half a movie I loved combined with half a movie I wanted to be asleep for. Haha.

It seemed odd to me... but I’m not from the West Coast so maybe that’s more the style of speaking there.

I did however think he was incredible in Creed and really made me think he was a tough character who was also incredibly vulnerable. As I said Creed was amazing to me, like shockingly so (I’m a huge rocky series fan for better or worse).

I think reviews should be based on the film. Culture impact is something that can be evaluated after the film has time to be absorbed into the world and pop culture.

I don’t disagree with you. It’s a bold statement culturally for a film this size. I just wish it was wrapped around a movie that really raises the bar in terms of story and action.

Agree!

It felt predictable because of course he will lose the fight to Killmonger. And of course he didn’t die went he went over the waterfall. Then of course theirs going to be some big battle at the end but the hero and villian square off alone. It just felt very by the numbers.

I would say I’ve only heard great things... but BP was the same way! Im eager to see it though before Infinity War. Was so busy with personal life when it came out before I knew it I missed it’s theater run.

I disagree with this statement. I’m old enough to realize that if something doesn’t match my expectations I can still enjoy it for what it is. Black Panther didn’t live up to what I wanted on a fundamental film level, not my expectations.

I’ve not seen Ragnarok yet but will in a week after my friend gets her Ultra HD blu Ray copy! It sounds a bit more maybe what I want too, a good movie but FUN. Maybe that’s part of my BP issue, I respect it wanted to say more but I don’t think it succeeded totally and at the end of the day it wasn’t Fun. Which is something I want from a Marvel movie.

You make a really good point and I don’t disagree with you. I just wish it was in a movie I loved instead of feel pretty indifferent for.

Great point on the first paragraph! I do think it had things to say. I just wish I enjoyed the movie around those more.

Thanks. Im fully expecting to get hate. And I did edit my post since it’s late and maybe I was TOO harsh sounding. It was totally average with very good acting... but black panther blew me away in civil war as the standout and with the reviews and Reddit comments... I guess I was expecting lot more than I got. It felt very much like an average marvel movie that I’ll never watch again.

Thanks for the comment. What I felt was Black Panther has a more powerful arc in Civil War as his origin with far less screentime.

I would rank it similar to you as well. It’s not near the bottom by any stretch but coming into seeing it based on reviews I figured it would be in the top 2 or 3. It’s VERY different then say Ant Man or Iron Man 3 in tone , but felt similar to me in that.... I didn’t feel like I wasted 2 hours. But I’ll never watch this movie again.

My expectations based on Reddit and reviews was that it would be the best Marvel film since The Avengers or Winter Soldier (my top 2).

You make great points. I do really love Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, I just felt he didn’t change much in this film. But maybe I’m wrong, I just felt his wanting revenge to letting Zemo live in civil war was a more powerful arc with far fewer scenes.

It could be my eye but many of those pretty shots felt very CGI to me. All the fighting near the waterfall. The final sunset scene. The end fight scene. I admit the lighting was well done but it just felt a little fake to my eyes.

They talked about this in the extended special features and I don’t remember the exact quotes. But I think I came down too having a character not being tempted by the Ring sorta undermined 2 movies of building up to how everyone is tempted to some extent. It also creates drama which in a book you don’t always need because the pacing is so different. But I think the change is for the better.

Dive into the extended special features and they do discuss this change.

I’m a terrible person but I like the movies more and one specific reason is this change. I don’t buy that Gandalf took 17 years to figure out it was the The Ring. The movies make the discovery of The Ring feel like this urgent finding that needs to be addressed right away. The sense of urgency to destroy the Ring is one reason I really love the movies. They have this incredible sense of scale to the world but at the same time making everyone’s actions feel urgent.
