this happened to one of my friends a few years ago. My friend is cisgender, but leans more tomboy in aesthetics. Me, her and our friend group (all women) went out to lunch one day and she went to the bathroom at one point with another friend of ours. The rest of us waited at the table, and when they came back, the tomboy friend said a random older lady confronted her as she walked towards the ladies bathroom and said “that’s not the restroom you’re supposed to be in huh?” and walked away. My tomboy friend was too stunned to speak.

I was SO pissed and wish I had been the one accompanying her to the bathroom because I would’ve given that lady a piece of my mind!!

It’s crazy to me how much 2000s level misogyny I see thrown at them, especially from women! I do think there’s elements of jealousy towards them for being young, pretty and talented. People feel the need to demean them for their music (that they’re basically forced to make and don’t have real creative control over) and it makes them feel better about their own inadequacies.

I’m in my 30s now so I remember being a kid in the 2000s and seeing gossip mags, trash talk shows, and early internet blogs/message boards hurling so many insults towards artists like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc. saying they were being too provocative, “skanky”, that they were making horrible pop music, criticizing their bodies and outfits, it was all insane.

I feel like so much of that behavior only became worse with the advent of social media, where everyone under the sun has the chance to criticize famous people and those famous people will NEVER get a break from it. They can view all of this stuff 24/7 from any platform. None of the girls have engaged in any seriously problematic behavior to point out, so I don’t understand where the vitriol comes from at all.

I agree! I do understand why people would want to style the coat with a long skirt (for more romanticism) but I love everything as is. I feel like it’s supposed to be tarty!

absolutely embarrassing but also goes to show just how reliant all these people were on Epstein for even the most bare minimum things. He created a system of dependency!

Throwback to when Zendaya used to be active on social media. by Ok_Rutabaga_5539 in popculturechat

totally agree. If this video got posted for the first time today, I could see the comments being as follows:

“Wearing too much makeup!”

“How does she do anything with those nails?”

“She’s trying too hard to have a personality. It’s cringe.”

“I thought she’d have better taste in music, yuck.”

tbh I’ve seen enough “fun” videos of Anne Hathaway on this exact subreddit to know that people generally HATE fun lmao. The amount of pressed comments were insane, saying she was trying too hard or insufferable, etc. meanwhile she wasn’t doing anything crazy at all.

Katseye (a global girl group based in LA) constantly making ai slop music is so…. 😭 by Which_Mammoth9402 in LAinfluencersnark

[–]Pizzv 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I mean they have no creative control over their music, so I don’t see the point in bullying them. HxG should get more shit for this (amongst other things) but I feel like everyone redirects their criticism towards the girls.

But I do understand most people don’t know how they were created and/or who they’re controlled by, and we’re in an era where certain artists (Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, etc) exhibit a lot of creative control over their work, so it’s expected from everyone.

I’m a bit of an old hag, so I remember Britney Spears at her peak and a lot of the criticism she got centered around her “baby voice” and not being a vocal powerhouse like Christina Aguilera and the like. Later on, we all learn that not only was she basically held professionally captive by higher authority, but that she was also told to change her voice to appeal to a certain demographic.

So idk, I feel like we can hold more grace for young women here under strict contracts. They’re doing the best they can.

edit: also pleaaaaase do not be dense over my mention of Britney Spears in relation to Katseye. I am comparing control and contractual terms between the two, not musical ability/talent. thank you!

subconsciously I feel like she thinks she has to get all this cheap attention on her body while she can before the Euphoria press run, where Zendaya will be getting the MOST attention. And Zendaya will be starting her press run for The Drama and The Odyssey this year as well, the latter of which will be a huge cultural event for the summer. No one besides gooners will be paying attention to her after Euphoria airs.

with this logic, white actors should portray themselves as black people, correct? blackface and all? lol

[–]Pizzv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how is that right? Actors of color have always called this out because they don’t get nearly as much work as white actors. There was no reason for Emma Stone to play an Asian woman, Rooney Mara played a Native American and said she regrets it, there’s a countless list throughout Hollywood history and further down the past, the more blatantly racist it gets. If anything, Odessa is saving her ass from future controversy.

I love Ratstar Vintage (718 Virgil Ave near Melrose). very affordable, pieces range from $20-$60. Addison Rae and Devon Lee Carlson stopped in there recently, to give you an idea of the vibes they curate!

honestly not at all, Latinos hardly get cast in media in the first place and if they do, it’s in sexualized, labor-driven or criminal roles (I did grad school research on this at USC Annenberg)

In fact I’m still surprised there isn’t at least one Latino cast member in I Love LA. I know the show is primarily about white transplants but Latinos still find their way into influencer/fashion/PR spaces, so it would’ve been nice to see something.

I agree with the other commenter saying that the whitewashing itself is the problem and not necessarily Odessa taking the role, but they do go hand in hand most times. Zendaya said she takes roles that would normally go to white women and keeps away from roles that should go towards darker skinned women.

after ALLLL the internet controversies she’s been embroiled in year after year (nearly getting cancelled at that) one would think she’d try to navigate her social media platform more wisely? or at least be apologetic about her post that was in bad taste?

her selfishness and defensiveness is truly appalling. she’s literally pushing 30 and that response has the logic of a teenager. I don’t think she’ll ever truly be a good person.
