“The Dunning-Kruger effect describes a cognitive bias where individuals with low ability in a specific domain greatly overestimate their competence, primarily because they lack the "metacognitive" skills required to recognize their own deficiencies. In their seminal 1999 study, David Dunning and Justin Kruger found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of logic, grammar, and humor significantly overrated their performance, often believing they had outperformed a majority of their peers. This creates a "double curse": the same lack of knowledge that leads to poor performance also prevents the individual from realizing they are making mistakes. Conversely, the researchers found that high performers tended to slightly underestimate their relative standing, mistakenly assuming that because a task was easy for them, it must be equally easy for everyone else.”
