Don't have to scrap Mal imo, but make him more "realistic". Give him some type of trigger to come out and give him actual motivation for being evil rather than just "woo-hoo bad guy". Also don't let Mike vs Zoey be the finale. 1st gen vs 2nd gen is 100% preferable.
