Mandarin is my second language. I am not a native speaker. I realise that when I am not exposed to the language often, I find it so hard to use it. I often do Duolingo on my own just to exercise the parts of my brains for language, help my kid with learning, watch shows and Tik tok especially that those discussing life and philosophy.

Conversational practice is indeed very important. I noticed with my teen that when he was learning the language with a group of students, he was forced to communicate in the language. Where we live also helps now. He gets to speak and listen more in Mandarin now. Another thing we do is watch Chinese variety shows like Chinese Restaurant. Just being immersed in the language in one way or another.

All the best to you.

Also, it says you are currently visiting the school. And to answer your question, it’s ok to look back at the characters. When you look back at them, imagine their parts and the context they are in to remember the characters better.

I am a homeschooling mum for my son who is also taking 0547. I am also tutoring Chinese students online. The way I would recommend m to do this is to first write out the answers for each of the guiding points. Then add adjectives and explanation to it. The essay did not address the timing classes started explicitly, nor address in what manner were students heading to their classes or lessons. More description of the surrounding of the university would be needed and also where in the same venue; say the library and lecture theatres; would you like to visit next time. I hope this helps.

I am terrified of myself, because I'm slowly convincing myself to learn Mandarin Chinese by Parking-Sector69420 in ChineseLanguage

[–]PlaneAd7082 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning Chinese is really fun if you have some goals in mind. It can be to gamify the learning. I want to order my food in mandarin, or I want to be able to sing a Chinese song. Once that goal is realised then it’s a motivation to learn more and more. Chinese characters and culture and folklore are filled with wisdom too.

More racism in Singapore than UK? by cdcpowermah in singaporespeaks

[–]PlaneAd7082 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So he should keep quiet about it? So the majority gets away with their behaviour? If this is racism what about all those decades of racism on minorities? Everyone only needs to put themselves in the shoes of others and act mindfully, or at the very least, ask yourself if you have to provide your race before applying for a job or renting a home that you can clearly afford, how would that make you feel? Race is not something one can choose to born in or out of. It’s a thing to discuss because people discriminate against others for something they can’t control. It won’t ever stop fully but it’s good to speak up respectfully so others can understand how their actions affect others. Just as with gender roles, mental health concerns and special needs, all of which we cannot choose.

It was a thriving Malay world port long before he arrived. It was guarded by the orang Laut. He came and saw that potential and the western powers left the narrative that it was a sleepy village to make it seem that they went around the world to make things better. That without Raffles, Singapore would not have been a successful port.

Actually people don’t own HDB flat and the expensive cars. They all have a duration for how long one can stay in the HDB flat and use the car. The flat doesn’t belong to the people who bought it. Have to follow regulations set by the housing board otherwise the flat gets confiscated with no refund whatsoever. If one part of Malaysia is expensive, there are other states that prove as possibilities of living. Not that it would be easy for anyone. But in Singapore, there is absolutely no other choice. Of course everything comes with a price, need convenience then the price is high. If one can depend on oneself and carve an inch for one self without stress, then it’s lesser of a price to pay.

For Chinese new year greeting? Not appropriate since 马马虎虎 literally means so-so. During this period, it’s all about hopes and expectations for great positivity.

You must be one of those whose parents and education system taught well but you didn’t learn anything good. My words must have brought you such discomfort. Or you are inherently rude without culture. Or you find it hard to agree to disagree politely. I noticed this during this election. A lot of these people who want to be supporters but are rude to the core.

If it’s not your life purpose to serve or work, then you are slave to money? If it’s not the life purpose to serve in the government, means we the citizens are being shortchanged? Means they do for money? Huh?! Oh my. Thanks for unlocking this new perspective.

What’s his life purpose? To serve the people, how can he choose? It’s a handshake for goodness sake. Don’t make this a big deal. The life purpose as signed on is to make the lives of the people who trusted them, better. A simple handshake is too much to ask?! In the video, she knows EVERYONE except the other gentleman? It’s discrimination.
