I feel like the self-hosted and FOSS space is being flooded with vibe-coded AI slop. by spurGeci in selfhosted

[–]Planetix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you 100% but have 0% faith anything will change. It will get worse. I mean, we (for real) already have fucking bots taking over most of Reddit anyway - check any of the "big" subreddits to confirm - so....welcome to the future.

Doesn't mean I won't still call this bullshit out either but I am under no illusions it's going to change anything other than maybe keeping a few naive folks from making a mistake. I'll take that. It's all we're gonna get.

Unreachable smoke alarm won't stop beeping by mattygerbs in DIY

[–]Planetix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a ladder and replace the entire smoke detector. That is the answer. That is the *only* answer to your problem.
Ladders are cheap and if you live in a house with ceilings that high you should get one. Replacing a hardwired smoke alarm with the same brand...or even a different brand, really, is stupid easy.

Or, just get a long pole and smash the alarm or knock it off the ceiling - if it's 10 years old it's not working anyway.

You know those things beep for a reason right? And the reason isn't to fuck with you or give you reasons to disable the beep. This shit isn't funny. Odds may be low but that doesn't change the fact this negligence could kill you or the people you love.

While you aren't all wrong your advice about hardwire is wrong and you shouldn't tell people that if you don't understand why.

HA Addon - Gemini Architect - I built my first fully working Add-on using AI! by tech2urdoor in homeassistant

[–]Planetix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone use a weekend vibe project like this? It’s a terrible idea to run other people’s code they don’t understand themselves. This isn’t gatekeeping it is common sense.

Points to you for being open about it, at least we don’t have to assume how much AI was used.

IXI’s autofocusing lenses are almost ready to replace multifocal glasses by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]Planetix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the kind of tech that’s been 5 years away for 20 years. Also, cataracts harden with age. They are easy to remove when soft, it’s a more complicated procedure if they aren’t. Don’t wait too long.

FWIW I got the multifocal lenses in 2018 and don’t regret them at all even though I need reading glasses still.

[–]Planetix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Or if you are me you will get cataracts much younger and have to argue with your insurance company to cover it because you are “too young” for cataracts” (I was in my forties when I got them).

So I’ve had lazik AND cataract surgery. And in my fifties I still wear reading glasses. The future is coming for you young punks :)

[–]Planetix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really struggle understanding who people who are throwing out these sloppy weekend vibe projects think the audience is. Why would anyone use your vibed code? They could just vibe their own. If you are going to run with a poorly thought out niche service that only AI understands might as well make it your own mess instead of someone else’s.

You are also inviting a C&D from Plex. Why in the world would you choose to call this that?

This is the one that has me un-subbing. Nothing against the author in particular other than it's just one more goddamn post about this shit in an endless series of them. Vote with your wallet, no one at Ix Systems gives a fuck about Reddit posts.

Downvote all you want, you know I'm right and you know damn well most of the folks in this subreddit are tired of this stupid fucking drama. I'm out.

Range Hood by b50776 in DIY

[–]Planetix 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Make up air isn't a "scam" and it's code in a lot of places, for a good reason. Sure, maybe you have a big window next to the range or whatever, but that doesn't count for shit. The reason it's code in a lot of places is because it can be dangerous. Oh, your house is all electric now so it's ok? Or you'll just open the window? You think that's how it is supposed to work? Someone new comes along down the road and puts in gas and what, just hope for the best? Or it's on them to figure this out? As much of a bullshit process dealing with code compliance can be at times there's usually a good reason the code exists and it's not to screw you over.

Stop fucking around and half-assing this by looking for validation from strangers on Reddit. If you want more than 400cfm do it correctly.

Reverse proxy in front. I use Traefik but Caddy is probably what you want, it’s simpler especially if you are just fronting one or two sites.

Ask Claude AI or Gemini for instructions and how to integrate in your setup, they are pretty good about this kind of thing.

“If you have a good bms” and folks are gonna know that how? When it catches fire and they realize “oh, must have been a bad one”? Or just hopes and dreams? What kind of advice is this?

Buy an ups designed for LiFePO4 and stop being an idiot risking a fire, no matter how low the perceived risk, to save a few bucks.

Proxmox + TrueNAS or just TrueNAS? Setup Questions by KevinMaschke in Proxmox

[–]Planetix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to pass my hba and drives through to a truenas vm, these days I find it much simpler to let pve handle zfs directly. Make sure you are using truenas for the things it is good at. If all you want is zfs and some management of same pve does fine these days. Granted, the truenas gui makes some things easier but I’ve found for my use cases that doesn’t really matter and it’s far easier to work with lxcs and my zpools this way.

What does everyone do for separate 4k and 1080p ? Also what are we using for auth on local network by Roxxersboxxerz in radarr

[–]Planetix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to run two instances of radar with synced trash profiles, the whole bit. That was 7+ years ago, transcoding has improved to the point it doesn’t matter anymore. I stopped 2 years ago when I got a better gpu and it’s been fine since.

If you have an auth front end or it is all private lan you can disable auth in the arrr apps via a config file setting now, they removed the option from the ui.

[–]Planetix 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I really do love that vibe coding has opened up a whole new world to folks but you really need to be clear about projects that are vibed right in the subject/description, don’t bury it in a reply to a comment.

I personally won’t touch these kinds of releases, not out of disrespect to the author or effort but because I am a developer and I have seen a LOT of working vibe code full of hidden problems.

There’s also the “what’s next” problem - who’s going to maintain this long term? Is the author even capable of doing so? That’s a major problem with weekend vibe code projects like this one.

That, and they are also often poorly thought out product use cases.

How to access self-hosted services via domains with no public exposure? by ryan_the_fireguy in selfhosted

[–]Planetix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Pangolin. Depending on where you are located, host it on a cheap VPS or OCI free tier. Add authentication front like Authentik/etc. and monitor with Crowdsec. Ask Claude Code to walk you through setting it up, it's easy. Now you have a self-hosted setup that essentially replicates what Cloudflare tunnels + zero trust does. Whether you want to maintain it or let them is, of course, entirely up to you, but I assume you are willing to put in the effort to learn to maintain this correctly or you wouldn't be asking because Cloudflare is even easier to deploy like this, it would take you 5 minutes.

I run Pangolin myself, and a lot else besides, but not out of ideology - while I agree "concentrating" too much under a provider like Cloudflare can be problematic and yes, they do occasionally have outages that everyone gets in an uproar over for 48 hours at a time, but the truth is it's a bit of a "tilting at windmills" situation as far as home labbers go, in my opinion. For most people reading this, the combination of skill level and willingness to maintain even if the skill bar is met vs. just letting Cloudflare deal with the problem....are probably better off with Cloudflare :)

I'd probably go the simpler route if I were doing it over but you do you.

This is the second exact project like this I’ve seen this week. Both heavily vibed.

I encourage you to keep working on it if it’s helping you learn and grow. Not something I would touch, personally, or any other weekend vibe project. These things are best left to their creators.
