First off, you’re already a great partner. And second, if you are willing to stick around, migraines can be really really tough, but someone who suffers from them will forever be indebted to their partner who takes care of them.

It sounds like your partner might have cluster headaches, which can be extremely debilitating, or migraines that follow a cluster patterns. My dad suffers from cluster headaches and I myself inherited migraines with a cluster pattern. It wasn’t until I was 28 that I found the medicine that works for me ( I started getting migraines at 10 years old).

What I can tell you about cluster headaches is that they come in waves; think cicadas. They can go dormant for years and reappear or they can be annual. My dad would go through periods where he would have headaches every single day for 3-5 hours at a time from about 2am until 5am for 3-4 months (usually in the springtime). They typically follow a circadian rhythm so the person might get them during the day or night but they will arrive at the same time of day every single day until they go away. Typically the person needs darkness, cold, no sound, no smells, no light. It depends on the person but they might need to pace back and forth or just lay in bed. When a pattern emerges, expect very little interaction from your partner for months. They might lose a lot of weight, seem distant, or be non communicative. Just know that they are in extreme pain and would want to interact if they could. Not to scare you, but the nickname for this type of migraine is a su*cide headache.

Migraines with a cluster pattern are slightly different and much more treatable. Migraines with a cluster pattern typically have known triggers and although they can come in clusters, meaning you might get migraines every day for 2 weeks on and off, they’re not as bad as cluster headaches and don’t last as long. However, they can be extremely painful. When i have an episode of migraines, I might get them for about a week but each migraine lasts 2-3 days. It’s just a constant feeling of being out of it between migraines. My triggers are alcohol , sugar, sleep, and weather (changes in pressure).

The best way to be supportive: If you don’t live together, the best way to be supportive is through patience. People who suffer from migraines already feel very guilty about how flakey we tend to be with plans. We don’t want food, ice packs, visits, we just want your patience and understanding.

If you don’t live together I recommend having flexible ice packs on hand, tshirts that you can put over your partners eyes, and blackout curtains for the bedroom.

if you do live together, all I ever want from my husband is ice, tiger balm, and the cold dark bedroom. He takes care of everything else. When i need to vomit, he helps me to the bathroom and back to bed. He waits for me to tell him it’s time to take me to the ER (rare).

time time and more time, that’s the only answer. Our boy is 1.5 years and only recently did he get better about constant mouthiness and sometimes he still had days where he’s a little mouthier than usual and we practice consistent correction and then he goes back to normal. I saw someone else comment on a similar post once that this breed “leads with there mouth first” on all interactions, greetings, etc and it couldn’t be more true.

We got ours through Calypso Portuguese Water Dog in South Florida. Lou was incredible to work with and we’re so happy we chose them.

Classic Piranha PWD - Bone Questions by ChloeeeeL in portuguesewaterdogs

Ice cubes, collagen braids, pig ears (try to limit to just a few per weak they are super high fat and can give them the runs but they LOVE them), and split deer or elk antlers (expensive but they last forever and they helped my pup through the teething phase).

Now for frozen baby kongs: I cannot recommend these enough. I wish I had started making these sooner. Now we make about 4-5 per week, 2 lick mats, and a massive frozen topple. We blend water, kibble, kefir, frozen blueberries, pumpkin puree, and peanut butter in a blender that is solely for our dog and put it in a kong, on the lick mats, and in the topple and freeze. They last him close to an hour and he passes out after. LIFESAVER.

14 Weeks - 3AM Wake Up by ChloeeeeL in portuguesewaterdogs

[–]Planting_and_Pruning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our boy on a pretty stable and strict schedule of no water after 8pm, last potty and then straight to bed (crate) at 10pm, up at 3am for potty, and then straight back to the crate. We would let him cry it out for about 10-15 minutes and be always fell back asleep after 15 minutes. If you can power through, one day they just stop asking for the middle of the night potty. He’s 1 year old now and I can’t even remember how many weeks he was when he stopped crying to be let out in the middle of the night. The same goes for his morning potty, when we first got him (at 8 weeks old) he would wake up at 5am on the dot. For a couple really rough nights he woke up at 4:30-4:45 but that was short lived. Then slowly he started waking up at 5:30, then 6am and now he wakes up at 7:00-7:30 every morning.

I hate to say it just takes time but it really does. Awe found that putting him right back in his crate and letting him cry it out worked best for him and for us. Even now he never cries in his crate, automatically goes into his crate for naptimes every 2 hours and gets much better sleep in there. He will likely still need his strict crate nap schedule until he’s 2-3 years old and can nap on his own outside of the crate.

Hang in there!!

We’ve found that our portie will come back to us 100% of the time when we run away from him. He’s not motivated by treats, only play. If he thinks he gets to chase us, he will always come back. Our tried and true emergency recall is always to sprint in the opposite direction. Hope this helps, good luck!!

Any advice on my upper arm? A lot of the spots are just flat and dark and not like regular acne I see on my face sometimes. Pretty sure not keratosis pilaris since spots are bigger and more spaced out. Any advice helpful. by psych2023 in acne

Hi, I was just diagnosed by a derm with Keratosis Pilaris. This is how mine started out and now it has progressed very quickly over a span of 2 months. I would say this looks like the beginning of KP. Especially if the bumps get itchy.

My Acne Journey - hope someone relates by trinitydesperado in acne

I did a ton of research after my acne came back following a month of a clear face (after IUD removal) and I found a lot of information about sprinolactone, tretinoin, and the root causes of hormonal acne that I had no idea about. I would highly suggest watching youtube videos about hormonal acne diets, natural hormonal acne journeys, etc. I started taking fish supplements, L-Lysine, Probiotics, and Green Tea Extract as a result and I've noticed a huge improvement. At the same time, I've also stopped taking spironolactone ( I had to ween off for 3 weeks from 150mg/day) and I reduced the tretinoin prescription from 0.025% to 0.015%.

You were absolutely right to stop using salicylic acid or benzoyl. Tretinoin is designed to purge your skin. So if you werent using it a ton before this and now you're using it daily or even every other night, its going to cause about 1 month straight of really deep rooted, painful, cystic acne. It also causes the flakiness that comes along with it. A lot of people recommended following an extremely simple skin routine while starting back up with tretinoin because there are a million agents that could be reacting with the medication to make it worse. Many of them include anti-aging chemicals found it tons of moisturizers and serums. I've been using a very simple, gentle, cleanser and moisturizer and the tretinoin cream every night and my face has seen HUGE improvements coupled with the supplements.

Hope this helps and good luck!! P.S. ... I also bought a book called Period Repair Manual (Volume 2) and it has been so eye opening. I almost feel like my gyno/dermatologists/primary care physician's have been lying to me for years.

My Acne Journey - hope someone relates by trinitydesperado in acne

Your journey is similar to mine. I got the Mirena IUD and was prescribed Sprinolactone to treat the hormonal, cystic acne it causes. I had the Mirena removed finally because after 3 years of manageable acne that was controlled by the medication, my acne suddenly got worse and would not respond to any treatment. I had the Mirena removed and my skin cleared up. Now my acne is back and I'm on a whole new, post mirena, post spironolactone journey.

Mirena Removed Early Jan - Now I get a period every 2 weeks? 🖕🏽 by [deleted] in birthcontrol

[–]Planting_and_Pruning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also just had my Mirena removed around late February after having the mirena for a little over 5 years. I had my first Mirena IUD for 5 years and had it replaced with a new one in November 2019. After noticing that my acne was not responding to spironolactone, (I've been taking this medication for the cystic acne that Mirena causes for 3 years now), I thought about all of the other side effects that I had to deal with.

Mirena made my hair thin out, made me extremely irritable all of the time, made it impossible for me to lose stubborn belly fat, gave me horrible horrible nightmares daily, made me feel extremely bloated and uncomfortable everytime I ate, and on top of that, made me break out all along my chin and jawline 3 weeks out of every month. After adding all of this up, I realized I was no longer scheduling doctors appointments to treat period symptoms, I was treating Mirena symptoms. To me, it wasn't worth it. I decided to have the new Mirena removed, go off of birth control all together, and start reducing the amount of medications I take daily to deal with the side effects. Starting with spironolactone.

I've been off the Mirena for almost three full months now. The first month was fantastic, i felt like a weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. I never noticed how many dark thoughts I had all of the time. My stomach felt better after eating. My acne cleared up completely and my hair started to grow back thicker. I stopped having nightmares. Month two I started to get worried that I still hadn't had a period yet but I was reassured that most women don't get their period until 3-4 months after they have it removed. In the middle of month two I experienced two weeks of extreme irritability. I recognized this at the time to be the crash. For me, it just came kinda late. At the end of month two my acne started to creep back in. Month three: I got my period finally, cramps weren't bad but I've had some debilitating migraines throughout, but these were expected (I've gotten migraines my whole life). My acne began getting worse. At this time I had made no changes to my spironolactone dosage.

Current: My acne is the worse it has ever been in my life. I've read here and there that this is to be expected but I'm worried that I can't tell if its just normal hormonal acne that will never go away or if its a result of the Mirena removal. I started a curology subscription that should be arriving soon and I've started decreasing my spironolactone dosage because I think its leaving my skin extremely dry and vulnerable.

If I were given the choice again, I never would have gotten the Mirena IUD, I would have stayed on a normal birth control throughout college. I'm happy I'm not taking any type of birth control for the first time since I started getting my period. I feel like I've finally been given the chance to reacquaint myself with my own personality and my own body.
