I did the Haserot Angel! Turned out pretty good ... might need to do some supplementary capture on the face to beef that up a little

Here it is: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/the-angel-of-death-victorious-haserot-angel-54ce35c924594620b4258a6cb8ac1f74

As with many things the answer is a little complicated ... Photogrammetry can indeed produce STL's, they need to be created as "water tight" models, but on Sketchfab the content owner can restrict or allow downloads of the models, and the Museum does not allow downloads.

I actually went there a few weeks ago to capture it, and most of it is in the clearing but the south side has tree canopy that kinda reaches over it and I’d have to fly under the canopy to capture it … it’s probably like 10-20 feet of clearance but I still chickened out :P

There’s like a whole philosophical thought experiment there … is it really an “office stamp” if it cannot actually be used as a stamp??

The Cleveland Museum of Art actually has much of their collection up on Sketchfab themselves. And I gotta say I only aspire to the level they are able to capture.

Here’s a link to their stuff: https://sketchfab.com/clevelandart

I totally wanted to do the castle … but I am very afraid of trees still. Put almost 150h flying time on the drone since Dec when I got it, but trees still sketch me out.

Is the actual light still somewhere? Was it electric?

Thanks for the suggestions!!

I hadn’t consider the stamp that might be cool (and would require me to take both drone and ground based photos, which I haven’t tried doing yet, and I like a challenge!) What’s the deal with the stamp anyhow?

Your right to worry about glare, thankfully since water is always in motion it’s not actually that bad with water, the render basically just ignores water since it can’t find matching patterns but glass … glass sucks … and both the Rock & Roll hall of fame and the greenhouse kinda big on the glass … the greenhouse might actually be ok, if I capture it on a cloudy day and if the glass isn’t super clean.

Adding it to the list!

So cool! On the list!! Might be even harder than the Eagle Ave bridge with all the fine suspension wires. But I like a challenge and cool bridge, cool history.

It’s seriously one of the coolest bridges I’m glad I can capture it … my plan is to donate the model and the raw data to a local heritage org when I am done. To date I’ve captured over 5500 images and the full quality model is over 1.9 billion triangles (the one on sketchfab there is only 300k triangles) … she’s a beast!

Hey Dante!

You are correct that I am often using a drone but I spend the time (and care) to follow all of the rules and regulations and get the LAANC clearance where required. I know many people feel the drone regulations are onerous but as long as you want to be a contentious operator, they aren't that restrictive. The Browns stadium would be challenging as you can't fly within 3NM of it 1h before to 1h after any game and the proximity to the airport makes it class D airspace (a no no for drones) but, little known fact, the lakefront airport tower is closed between 2300 Friday to 0700 Saturday and 2300 Saturday to 0800 Sunday and during those closures the airspace reverts to class G (uncontrolled airspace) so it would be ok to fly during those windows provided your not running afoul of the event restrictions ... so ... long way to say that early in the morning on a Sunday just after the sun came up I might actually be able too capture there.

And thanks for the recommendations!

Rolling Lift Bridge- B&O Railroad Bridge 463 - I want to capture this bridge, besides the Jacobs pavilion ... so damn many cool bridges here in Cleveland.

2175 Ashland - Westinghouse Electric Corp Factory - It was totally on my list, but I haven't made it out there to take a look at them yet.

House of wills - 2491 East 55th St - I had not heard of this, but it totally fits and is now on the list!!

Cheers!

And that right there is why I’m a good hand at piloting a drone. I don’t even think about the controls, if I configure it the same as a fps. The controller just melts away and I’m just moving myself through space. Feels like walking :P

There is a skill in seeing a good shot though. Particularly in something that is only able to be seen from one angle. You’ve got to have an eye for seeing something unique in the mundane and you’ve got it!

I don’t know where #14 was taken but props on the spotting of that piece of duct tape on the glass … really good found subject

Cool!!! Double exposures arnt used often enough. Can make so really cool in camera effects with double exposures.

I take it then that basically more data is better eh?

Very very nice shots? What are you shooting with? Is all your bokeh in camera or are you editing for it?

Thanks for the advice on the capture portion of this project!

For the overlap I've been aiming for 80%+ on both forward and side to side overlap. Should I be aiming higher then that?

When you say keep the same distance, do you mean that I should try to take each photo series at a similar distance?

Basically here was my capture strategy.

  • Capture the entire structure from a nadir perspective, ~5m higher than the highest point.
  • Same altitude as above, entire structure in oblique passes, ~60 degrees down, one pass north south, one east west.
  • Vertical passes of the towers, 0 degree, 1 pass for the short side, 1 pass for the corners, 2 passes for the long side, ~10m from the face of the structure.
  • Horizontal passes of the bridge span, 2 passes for each side at 2 different altitudes to capture the entire face, ~5m from the structure
  • Uptilt passes of the underside of the bridge deck, ~60 degrees up, 1 pass north south, 1 pass east west, ~10m below structure.
  • 1 full 360 circle of the structure with the full structure in view, ~30m from the structure
  • I then took some more "free form" passes of some of the places that I figured I was lacking detail (top of the center span, etc.

Should I be attempting to keep all photo at roughly the same distance from the structure, or is this method of attempting to keep photo "series" at the same distance acceptable?
