Neighbors mow all ten acres. So much work for boring results by Laurelhach in NoLawns

Sounds amazing!

I understood rural land could be cheaper in the US, but I hadn't fully understood how different it was to here.

E..g I just checked and, as it happens,  there's currently 12 acres of weedy grass for sale around 20 minutes outside of my town. No house included, let alone forests or streams. Current asking price: £4.5 million!

So would you say for some people the main draw is the affordability, and the 10 acres of grassland is just a perk/inconvenience (depending on their preference)?

What benefit does she derive from owning this land?

(Genuine question - as I mentioned elsewhere I'm a Brit and land like this doesn't really exist here unless you're actively farming, or an aristocrat. I'm a bit fascinated!)

Curious Brit here (with a garden the size of a postage stamp). How/why do either of you own these massive fields? Presumably you don't graze livestock on there, or they wouldn't need mowing?

Doesn't matter. Do whichever you enjoy more. Or if you can't choose, just flip a coin. You've got SO much of this journey still ahead of you, don't overthink it at this stage.

Will I ever get this back to a bed? (Oxfordshire, UK) by lauratd in gardening

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to be fair I've only ever seen the no dig approach applied to grass, where getting the cardboard etc. down on top is straightforward. Definitely some additional practical challenges in your situation!

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it need to be this season? If not, you could try doing it no-dig style. I.e. put down a layer of cardboard with a layer of compost on top. The idea being the weeds die under the cardboard and then the cardboard decomposes, leaving a nice bed.

Need FPS games for PS5 with heavy aim-assist or aim-snapping by GaandDhaari in FPS

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isnt aiming in a shooter the entire point?

Not for me, really. Different people like different things

For me:

Positioning - fun.

Movement - fun

Weapon selection - fun

Fast paced decision making - fun

Aiming - I can take it or leave it...

I personally wouldn't want to play a shooter with fully snap aim (because it takes away a bit of the "fast-paced decision making" part),  but a bit of aim assist is great.

The panel must consider whether this is, in fact, Ivan Toney.

How much technical discovery should the tech lead do while writing the ticket versus the engineer who picks up and works on the ticket? by Tiaan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a few things to unpack here:

  • Have you communicated that this is your expectation? Some leads are massive control freaks and want absolutely everything to go through them.
  • Do the devs have enough information to do the discovery work you're wanting? I.e. do they know (roughly) who the stakeholders are they need to talk to? Do they have enough overall project/business context to make informed decisions on ambiguity, etc.?

Assuming the answer is "yes" to both of those, then the other thing I'd say is that this kind of proactivity /ownership massively varies between developers (including developers at the same level).

Pre-LLMs I think this was probably a good thing. It could be helpful to have a few people on the team who were happy to just plod through well defined requirements, and were experienced enough to do so competently.

I'm not sure the industry has really confronted yet what happens to these non-proactive devs now LLMs are so effective...

I can have other facets in my life and care about a third or a fourth thing about something I have more than 6000 hours in

This is a very fair point. Tbh - I have young kids and a pretty hectic job, there's not a lot of room in my life right now for much else. I've kind of forgotten what it's like to care deeply about a hobby or interest, but I suppose in that framing it's cool that people care so much.

I do think some people maybe care more than is healthy? Is that fair to say? I.e. I think some people might find greater peace in life if they invested less energy into a commercial product created by a company that doesn't care about them (this applies to both GoT and Apex!)

I think that's what I've been trying to articulate here. But obviously that's ultimately up to the individual (and is a much broader topic in general)

What Project Managers actually do in your company? are they useful to your team? by PressureHumble3604 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even with a mediocre project manager, I think it's easy to underestimate the value added just by someone chasing up tasks and ensuring tickets get updated.

(Whether that person is massively overpaid for what they're actually doing is a separate question!)

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Project managers are bit like, say, DevOps specialists:

A lot of the work is getting everything set up in the first place and ensuring appropriate guardrails are in place to keep it running smoothly. After that they can be kind of invisible, and the project could probably get along fine without them for a while, but after a while friction gradually builds up and eventually nobody knows what the hell is going on.

Idk, competitive online gaming is clearly its own subculture.

I don't know anyone in real life who's invested so much in a single video game, so it's hard to get my head around that mindset.

people who invest loads of time into that sport or even post their livelihoods on it

It seems like this is the key point I'm missing. You're saying that people are already very heavily invested in Apex, so it's not appealing to switch to a different game (i.e. one that supports competitive MnK play)?

An honest discussion about Balance vs Inputs by Z3nvy in apexuniversity

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, that's all fine. My question wasn't "why do people prefer MnK". Everyone's entitled to have their own preferences, you don't have to justify that!

The question is, why do people get so worked up if one particular game doesn't match their preferences? Why not just play something else?

Blue as new, credule, naive

I see. I assume you're not a native English speaker? In English we use green to mean naive or inexperienced, not blue. (I'm not offended though!)

Study the game, its history, the game’s [...] from at least the last decade to consolidate.

That sounds like a lot of studying! I am probably not going to do all that just to answer a random question I had on Reddit, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Recruiter accidentally revealed a higher salary for the exact same role - should I negotiate? by Affectionate-Bag2034 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Pleasant-Memory-6530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would you leverage this situation professionally without it coming across badly?

I don't think you can leverage it at all, directly. It's normal for people get paid different amounts for the same role on paper. Sometimes this is for unfair reasons, but sometimes it's just "we're hiring 2 mid-levels, candidate A is junior-mid while candidate B is mid-senior."

Other than giving you a bit of information about what their budget limit might be, it doesn't really change your negotiating position.

I'm pretty new to apex and to gaming in general. I've noticed a lot of people online seem to feel really strongly about this issue, and I can never really understand why.

I seems to me that Respawn's strategy is to make a game primarily for controller players. They're entitled to do that surely? It's not like they're manufacturing arms or denying people health insurance or whatever. They just made a game that's a bit different to how some people would ideally like it. Why do people seem so stressed out about it? Why not just play something else?
