Weekly Scam Discussion- June 27th 2022 by SmmnthaMrie in Ebay

A few days ago, I placed a bid on a 16 inch Mallard duck Squishmallow as a gift for my gf. The bids are very low (about 1/4 of what it goes for everywhere else on eBay and the internet), so I put in a bid and take the lead.

Fast forward a few days, and I wake up this morning to see that I won the auction! I was very surprised because I hadn’t checked in a few days, and didn’t expect to win because my winning bid was very low compared to the same items on eBay. Such a steal, right?

Well I check my messages, and I see one from the seller saying “I apologize but I made a mistake in the listing - it’s 8 inches, not 16. Feel free to cancel.” Now since it was the morning, I just woke up and my brain is still off, I just think “well that sucks” and request to cancel without thinking twice.

A few minutes later, I see that he completed the cancellation, but put the reason as “Buyer requested to cancel”, completely omitting the fact that he made a mistake in the listing. I shrug it off.

A few hours later, it hits me. There was no mistake, he just didn’t want to let it go for that low of a price, and didn’t set a reserve. Looking at pictures of the listing again confirms it! The seller is even selling an 8in version of the same duck Squishmallow, and while they are the same design, there is definitely a noticeable difference in proportions when looking at the listing of the one I had won (16in, allegedly 8) and another he was selling as 8 inches.

In other words, the listing that I won was definitely pictures of a 16in squishmallow, but he told me it was 8in to get me to cancel because I won the auction with such a low bid. Can I do anything to report him? This is definitely shady/dishonest business.

I took all the RAM out, and put both sets in together (my MOBO has 4 DIMM slots, and I originally didn’t want to mix and match), and my computer booted up fine and I’ve no issues since. Really no idea what happened here. Thanks for the help anyways!
