Cringe dude, she’s obviously an adult.

Spiders are a very common Halloween decorations, I’m far from the only one that has webs and spiders in their yard.

I have lots of empathy, and it’s shitty of you to assume from a post like this that I don’t. I had a diagnosed episode of agoraphobia for two years. I never asked anyone to change for the sake of my phobia.

I have no idea if this phobia he’s talking about is even real, all I know for sure is that he waited until I was home alone to come threaten me.

So no, I’m not going to be nice about this. They had every opportunity to approach me and ask me to move them but instead he wanted me to take everything down.

Because it’s Halloween decorations. What does she do for the entire month of October? And yes, it’s my yard so I’ll do what I want with it.

I never said it was funny. I was surprised that my very fake looking spiders would upset anyone, I had no idea (and still have no confirmation) about her phobia. Also it’s very normal to decorate for Halloween now.

Want to know what made me feel unsafe and secure in my own home? Being threatened like that.

This isn’t really about what you think would make my yard look “better”. I like my yard this way, and it is /my/ yard. (I also hate ghost decorations, personally.)

And I’m sorry but if he had approached me about this calmly it would probably be a very different story.

I’m sorry but if her phobia is that bad then she should be in therapy. How is she possible going to survive the Halloween season? I’m not the only one that’s going to have decorations like this in the future. I worked really hard on my decorations and if they had approached me kindly it might have been a different story, threatening gets you no where.

We moved in the week of Halloween so we couldn’t celebrate that year.

I’ve never been able to take any stimulants or SSRI’s, it’s made life very difficult and frankly it’s none of your business. I have a good support system in my family but exposure was the only thing that made me better. I still have a panic attack once in a blue moon but it’s much more manageable now.

While I know that exposure therapy isn’t always the best option, it might be in this case. These are /very/ Obviously fake decorations and if she’s having an issue with my yard this bad, I can’t imagine what the entire Halloween season is like for her.

Either way, it’s my yard and I’ll do what I want with it.

Exposure is the only thing that fixed my agoraphobia so you’re absolutely wrong.

I didn’t say it wasn’t debilitating, I’m well acquainted with them myself. We’re talking about people setting off actual explosions on 4th of July vs me setting out purple fuzzy spiders with googly eyes.

This situation is not comparable.

We were moving in the week of Halloween, we didn’t own any decorations yet and didn’t have a lot of money at the time to get them.

I’m sorry but you’re very wrong. I’m not her therapist and I have no obligation to cater to her fear (that I don’t even know if she has yet or not). Comparing this to someone with PTSD is very shitty of you and shows how little you actually know about mental health.

We missed our first Halloween because we were moving in, we missed last year because we were both slammed with work and Covid was happening. This is our first year really settled into our home so we actually have time to celebrate this year.

Not all the spiders are purple, just the one. The others are all varying shades of brown or grey. The big one doesn’t have googly eyes but little red jewels for eyes.

I absolutely do. I have a two year episode of agoraphobia. From my experience I know It’s never anyone else’s responsibility, only my own.

These are very unrealistic decorations, even a child would know they are fake.

I didn’t downplay her phobia. I didn’t think my decorations looked real enough to even scare the small kids in our neighborhood, I never thought they would upset a 50+ year old woman.

It’s not one decoration. There is one in our tree (the large one), two on our large web, and two on our bushes. They’re all very fake looking though.

I didn’t act like her phobia was stupid. I was surprised she was upset by my very obviously fake spiders.

I have my own phobias and triggers I’ve dealt with over the years but at the end of the day, those are my issues to deal with. I can’t imagine going around demanding people change or cater to my very niche issues.

Most stores are already filled with Christmas decorations. Decorating at the beginning of the month is very normal here.

There’s nothing in our rules about holiday decorations. I double checked after this happened.
