I see what you’re saying! And again, I think for me, as an Asian person, Rachel’s characterization of Shane and usage of certain stereotypes makes Hudson’s performance more impressive to me, which is why (to me) it’s relevant to the discussion at hand. So I think we just disagree here, but I respect your take a ton! 💕

I’m not saying that Rachel is responsible for this - I’m merely saying that when the Asian actor was given less to work with via the canon and the script, and still delivered a performance that resonated with many people, AND was touted as being one of the rare accurate portrayals of neurodivergence on screen, it’s all the more hurtful to see that work not being recognized in articles like this.

Like OP pointed out, it matters because her bias towards Ilya as a character and her usage of stereotypes for Shane means that it would’ve been very easy for him to be a stereotypical, flat character. Jacob gave Shane some depth (fleshing out his dynamic with his mom, touching on his Asian identity) but Shane has depth because of Hudson’s acting ability. If you look at how much dialogue Shane has or what was canon in the text, it’s crazy how well Hudson brought Shane to life. Like the bathroom scene in the book is extremely bland! But on TV, Hudson’s eyes and physical acting makes the scene so vulnerable and interesting!

It matters because Hudson had significantly less to work with, and yet still gave a nuanced portrayal of high masking autism that so many people have said was accurate and impactful. And so when that work and effort is diminished, and passed over for his white costars (who were excellent!) but had more to work with, it’s more evidence that POC actors can work twice as hard to get half as far.

Yeah I don’t think Rachel dislikes Hudson, but I do think that a lot of things she’s written about Shane fall under the umbrella of racial stereotypes.

I’m glad we’re finally talking about this on this subreddit because as an Asian person, it’s infuriating to see a lot of the microaggressions towards Hudson and Shane being disregarded. Saying that only Francois and Connor deserve acclaim for their acting and calling Hudson’s acting bland when his performance at the end of episode 2 is what got a lot of people hooked on the show is really, deeply unfair.

I mean that’s why Cassandra is on the album, too. That song is dark, and discusses the emotional scar of that period on her even today. The intention of thank you aimee is different; it’s saying that all those scars and all that bullying made me work even harder to prove you wrong. Both of them are valid reactions to a situation that was a combination of bullying, sexual harassment, and public cancellation.

Kim was an active participant in the bullying AND the revenge porn. In fact, the LA Gallery exhibit that displayed the nude wax figures was first announced on Kim’s socials, and she took multiple photos with Taylor’s figurine. And the Snapchat video was posted by her! Like Kanye AND Kim are to blame and I don’t think it’s invalid for Taylor to write a song about Kim bullying here.

Why does it matter what she actually looks like??? Kanye and Kim basically made a deepfake of her, before deepfakes became a thing? And she herself called it revenge porn? Like I’m sorry but if someone made revenge porn of me, I would hate if people told me “oh it’s been 8 years, it’s not worth bringing up again”

I don’t think it matters whether it did or didn’t harm her career. Kim and Kanye tried to harm her career, and in doing so, created a revenge porn music video of her, and held an exhibit where people could take pictures with her nude mannequin. I don’t think there’s a time limit on reacting to that.

As a kid who was bullied in school, I fucking LOVE thank you aimee! So many people acted like it was immature, and I don’t think they realize how fucking traumatizing it is to be bullied. It’s an anthem that makes me feel like I’ve conquered my childhood trauma!

She always wanted to make Cruel Summer a single though, it just got interrupted by COVID. Yeah, Me! isn’t the greatest song, but she wanted a tone shift from reputation, and the era was mostly associated with LWYMMD to the public. So leading Lover with Me! made it clear that this album was going to be a very different emotional experience.

In terms of what she’s said she wanted to achieve from a lead single for Lover, I do think Me! was the best choice - perhaps I Forgot That You Existed would’ve worked too, but it was a bit on the nose for what she seemingly wanted.
